a thoughtful gift

The last day Lizzie & Russell were in town we met up for a final drink and tapita together, and Lizzie gave me this very thoughtful gift. I think in part because she had been dismayed by the stack of plastic mineral water bottles she saw at my house. In fact, I even apologized for this when they first visited Caza Azahar, because I know it’s a shitty practice.

Thing is, when I first moved to Sevilla in 1993 the city was in the throws of a months-long drought and water was being rationed. But even the water that was available was being taken out of the nearby filthy river, quickly treated, and sent to the city. And well, it may have been safe to drink, but it stank like a fouled swimming pool, and tasted, well, just like that. Even showering in this water was unpleasant, and that’s when I started buying mineral water. It became my thing, just what I did.

In general the tap water here is fine, and tastes okay. Though in my opinion it’s always better served cold. Though of course I happily use it to make coffee, cook with, etc. And I even got into a new habit of making up jugs of lemon water, especially in the summer, which I would have on hand to drink during the day, also using tap water. This cut down on my mineral water purchasing considerably, since I drink at least 3-4 litres of water a day. But I still had bottles of mineral water on hand, basically to take to bed with me. I’ve always been a bad sleeper, and wake up several times a night. And I always drink water each time I wake up. So my habit was to take a chilled bottle of mineral water to bed.

But now I have this lovely thermos bottle, that I can fill up with chilled tap water before going to bed, and it stays nice and cool all night. This 500ml bottle is actually a bit too small to see me through the night, but it will be great for travelling. So now I’ll be getting a 750ml – or even 1L – version for my bedroom. And those plastic bottles will soon be gone. I mean, I do put all my plastics, glass and paper in the recycle bins near my house, but of course most of it never actually gets recycled. So I am happy to have this new option. Thanks Lizzie!

emasesa, sevilla, water

Back in February when I thought I was literally flushing money down the toilet I made a few changes in order to save water, but the water bill kept coming in very high and also saying that nobody lived here and that those 0 inhabitants were using more than 300 litres of water a day (!!!).

So I spoke to my next door neighbour about his water bill and it turned out they were paying half the amount I was – and they have a baby! So I finally went down to the Emasesa office to ask what the heck was going on and they told me that I had to “empadronar” (not sure what this is in English, basically you register how many people are living in your house at a government office) and bring that certificate to the office in order to change the rate. Because apparently the rate you pay is less when more people live in your house.

And so I did all this and the next water bill, which arrived yesterday, was a little more than half the amount of the previous one.

Great, you say? Well, yes. But, why didn’t Emasesa tell me about the empadronamiento certificate when I first went to their office in February to change the name on the water bill – a “service” for which they charged a whopping 78.50€? I mean, wtf. They obviously saw that my place was listed as having no inhabitants and knew about the crazy rate I’d be paying. And if I hadn’t spoken to my neighbour I’d never have known that my water bill was off because every other place I’ve lived in Spain had the water included in the rent.

In other news, my old friends at Movistar are now suing me because I didn’t pay their final – INCORRECT – bills in which they charged me for service when I didn’t have any and, after several phone calls from me (I’ll never get that time back), wouldn’t send me corrected ones. Bastards.

And now I am off to enjoy a birthday lunch with Pilar and forget all this crap for awhile.

flushing money…

flushing, toilets, water

While most people’s thoughts (and blog posts) are about romance and roses today, my thoughts are firmly planted in the practical and somewhat mundane. Which is how to save money on my water bill. This is another “extra” to pay, as at the old place the water was a flat rate included in the rent. And since moving in here it’s like I’m being “20 euroed” to death, as several times a week I have to go and pick up something for the new casa az that ends up costing 20 euros. Things like energy-saving lightbulbs, a new showerhead, dish draining tray thingy, kitchen light fixture… the list goes on and on. Some things I’ll be reimbursed for by the landlords but others are just the expense of moving somewhere new and finding that new things are needed.

Then today I finally made it over to the water company office to change the name on the water bill (they wouldn’t let me do this over the phone for reasons too boring to recount) and I found out they are going to charge me 78.50€ (!!!) to do this. I mean seriously WTF?? Nog worked this out to about 800 euros an hour in terms of actual work involved. Gaaaah!!

And so saving money is on my mind. Nog also informed me that the most water-consuming activity is probably flushing the toilet, which got me thinking about, well, not flushing after every visit to the loo. Do any of you do this? It actually makes sense, like not running the water while brushing your teeth (which I stopped doing when I moved to Sevilla during a drought in 1993), but it also feels a bit unhygienic. I mean obviously this would only be after “number ones”, and perhaps we’d flush after about four visits. Does anyone know if this would actually be helpful in terms of cutting down on money spent and water consumption?
