Just possibly derailed one of Ivan’s posts by going off on a tangent about cats. So welcome to gatitos, etc… a place to talk about all animals who enrich our lives. In mine they happen to be those three, though the middle one, Lua, has now passed on. Notice total-bitch-from-hell look on Lua’s face – click on pic for better view 😉 . Oh man, do I ever miss that look … and her. Even almost two years later.
The other two gorgeous boys are Sunny (Lua’s son, on the left, who is actually a dog) and little street urchin rescue cat Azar, who is really some strange other-wordly being that is mostly cat but often rather spooky in how much he behaves like a very wonky human. He also has a wicked sense of humour. In case you are interested, here is how they got their names: Cat Names
And for more photos of this bunch (and some other people’s felines) you can check out: Cat Pics
Must do something about rearranging that album one day . . .

Why should I mind having a post derailed, when I’m pretty much derailed myself? *giggles* Anyway, I miss having a cat or two about the place. One day, when circumstances permit, I’ll have cats again…

This is a bit odd… It says there are ‘no responses’ to your post, but there’s my first comment, plain as day. H’mmm. So this is a test, to see what it says next.

Cats are essential!
When I was seven I got my first cat, a very tiny black and white female far too young to leave her mum. She had to be bottlefed the first weeks and taught how to “pee and poo”.
The reason I got this tiny one was that one of my grand uncles had friends whose barn cat just had a litter. Of course I was shown the kittens, and of course I wanted one. The farmers was just happy to get rid of a kitten so I left the farm with her in a box.
I was only allowed to keep her for a year. Dad died and the next summer Mum, I and the cat spent in my grandparents home back in the inlands. The cat became an outdoor cat. When it was time to go south and back to school Mum decided we couldn´t keep the cat, and my other grandfather shot her. Later I got a guinea pig, but it wasn´t the same.
Most of my grown up life I was married to a man who claimed to be allergic to cats. When we split up the both youngest hatchlings wanted to have a cat. I was reluctant since their older brother is allergic to cats. When he went to Uni it didn´t take long until the first cat, a rescue, moved in. Some time later the next cat moved in.
I wouldn´t mind a third, I dream of a red Maine Coon male… But that will have to wait. The two bedroom flat I live in isn´t big enough for three indoor cats.

Ah sure it’s big enough. Lua, Sunny & Azar all lived here quite happily in my two bedroom flat for years. Though I think it helps that I have several balconies for them to lounge about on, getting a bit of fresh air. In summer they actually sleep out on the balconies.
However, one thing that became very apparent after Noggin moved in was that we needed a bigger bed – a standard double bed just wasn’t big enough for two people and three cats so we ended up getting a king-size one (heaven!)
I’ve often thought of getting a third cat since Lua passed on but I kind of reckon the next one will find me somehow.
Red Maine Coons are gorgeous, aren’t they? I’ve always hankered after an Abyssinian myself.

I should have known it wouldn’t take long to get around to cats!! 😉
I have had three cats while in a ONE bedroom ~600 Sq ft. apt. It wasn’t hard at all. Of course, I had a lot less JUNK then…

You know the old joke about ‘herding cats’ – that it is not possible? Well, I can actually herd my cats out of the living room each night before bed. I just clap my hands together and say ‘out out!’ and they very obediently go out to the bedroom for the night – this we’ve had to do since Sunny started occasionally pooing on the sofa *in protest* early in the morning if we didn’t get up quick enough to give him his brekky. 😕
But otherwise I’m no good at all with disciplining my cats. SpaceCadette apparently uses a spray bottle when hers are misbehaving. I mostly tend to either snap my fingers (Sunny seriously *knows* what this means) or else I make a cat hissy sound like Ssshhht! Which stops both of them in their tracks when they are doing something BAD. Like ripping our bedsheets to shreds.
So, any tips on disciplining cats? Other than the spray bottle option, which I don’t think the boys would respond well to. They’d just run away and then plot other devious ways to get back at me . . .

It turns out that the CCD (cat control device – aka spray bottle) only works when you are in the room to spray them. It doesn’t seem work as a deterrent.
Well frankly – what’s the point of that? 😕

My poor hot boys! It’s been about 45º here the past few days – well, that’s the official temperature at the airport. In the centre of town mid-afternoon it’s quite a bit hotter.
So all of us here are feeling quite floppy, but as the boys will insist on wearing those fur coats, I came up with a bit of a solution for them today.
I took three of those blue freezer-pack things and wrapped them in a towel. Then tried to convince Sunny to lie on it, but (silly dog!) he preferred the floor. Meanwhile clever cat Azar soon discovered the Cold Towel and is shown here quite enjoying himself while Sunny swelters in the background.

What a smart boy — his body language is so much more relaxed than Sunny’s.
I gotta try that one. 🙂
RE the spray bottle; I figure they’re gonna do what they’re gonna do — the least I can do is register a protest when I witness an infraction!

Relaxed? That cat is practically boneless! 😀
I guess Sunny is so SOLID that he never gets quite as floppy as Azar, but he’s a pretty laid back dude all the same. Meanwhile, it’s Azar who is the neurotic weirdo, bless him.

Speaking of floppy, here are two more pics of Azar looking very relaxed … typical Azar sitting position in the second photo. I ask you – is this a cat?

Had to do the usual ‘summer’ thing for Sunny today – I really don’t know why this always happens to him.
At the base of his tail, every summer, the fur gets all matted and greasy and covered in dandruff – it’s really quite gross. And apparently the ‘cure’ for this thing is to snip off all the fur at the base of the tail and then thoroughly clean the skin – it’s some sort of parasite I think.
Well, just barely managed the snipping today – now Sunny is hiding out under the bed. The cleaning bit will have to wait until tomorrow when we can once again catch him unawares …
Has anybody else heard of this thing? Azar doesn’t get it and Lua never had it. Very strange …

Today is Sunny’s birthday – 13 years young! 🙂
Actually, almost exactly 13 years as I write – he was born on August 5 around 10.30 in the morning.
Hard to believe he was ever this small (or I was ever that thin)…

I browsed some of your cat photos, Az, real beauties!
*sigh* I must buy a proper camera… I´m embarrasing my cats by showing the lousy pics I get with my mobile phone…

Shit, the majority of the older pics in my cat photo gallery were taken with a very cheapy snapshot camera – then had to scan them all. Took almost forever.
The digital camera is way better.
I really like the new pic of ‘Bagheera’ though might send you a couple of other versions.
Meanwhile, Sunny is lying here on the floor looking rather hot but also totally gorgeous – I’ve never seen such a handsome cat in my entire life.

Hi az,
I don’t know what happened, but I think I didn’t have my WPblog set up right; the comments I made here don’t even show up over on my blog.
How’re the little beastie boyz these days? It’s getting colder, are they finding warm spots to flop these days?
