Which one do you prefer? Las Vegas? Miami? New York?
I’d actually never seen any of them before today, but this morning I noticed that one of our new Telefonica tv channels was showing a three-parter this afternoon. One of each. So Nog & I thought this would be a good way to check them all out and compare them (though he’d previously seen some of the original Las Vegas ones). And anyhow, it was a nice & cosy way to spend a holiday Friday afternoon.
Curled up on the sofa with the cats – Doritos &
for me … Pringles &
for Nog.
I think they are all quite fine light entertainment. I don’t think I’d go out of my way to watch them (unlike how I totally arrange my life to watch House π ) but now if I see one of them is on and I’m wanting a bit of distraction they would fit the bill more than most tv programmes I know of. And I quite like the Who theme music.
So, which one is your favourite … and why?
I’m not sure. I’ve seen quite a few of the Las Vegas ones (though not for at least three years), so I’m familiar with the characters. The New York one was the first I’d seen. On the whole I think I like the Vegas one best, but it has to be a provisional judgement.

Well, the inimitable raincoaster has posted about CSI Miami’s David Caruso’s ability to act with his sunglasses. π
Just wondering why three such series were deemed necessary?

Now that is a question which I have asked many times, especially since I think the Miami version of CSI sucks sucks sucks big time. I like the original Vegas version, and watch it regularly. (I do not rearrange my life for any TV show, especially since we now have a hi-tech DVR that will watch TV for me.) I have never watched the NY version since it came after Miami and I figured it would just be another piece of crap.
The characters in the Miami version are cardboard cutouts, the situations unbelievable, the product placement of Hummers as the CSI vehicle of choice makes me want to vomit every time I see it.
I can’t say anything about the NY version.
I enjoy the characters in the Vegas version. I like the dynamic — the investigator who used to be a stripper, for example. The low key development of the love interest that is happening is also intriguing.

The investigator who used to be a stripper … I totally want her hair! At least in the episode I saw. Totally straight, somewhat choppy chin-length bob with fringe (bangs). Spent the whole time saying to Nog – I want that hair, I want that hair!!! – and I think the rest of the programme was okay too. π
The Miami and New York ones had no seriously fab hair in them …

Oh well, I want her hair too. I also want her body. But I don’t have a personal trainer as she undoubtably does.

Da Vinci’s Inquest; the original, and finest, iteration of the genre. The producer of CSI got the idea when s/he was up in Canada for some other series. I forget where that was reported, but it made the papers in Vancouver.

The reason there are three similarly themed shows, is that the first was such a hit, they wanted even more money. That’s what happened with the Law and Order series, first. I think they’re all Bruckheimer series, aren’t they?
I like the NY series and the Las Vegas ones best; too much superficial pulcritude on MIami…
Gary Sinise is a complex character on NY, and plays “Gil’s” counterpart on that show. Backstory is that he lost his wife in the Twin Towers, and some of the background is how he’s finding another relationship, and starting to build a relationship (very sporadically) with his late wife’s kid, whom she gave up for adoption. Like I said, interesting. Also, one of the field ops is a lone survivor from a mass murder, and they’ve gone into that this season as well.
All three are good for diversion. My fave of crime shows is “Numb3rs” — love that show, crime solving based on mathematics (and shot at CalTech, one of my stomping grounds — see the crew there from time to time). Besides, I really like David Krumholtz and Rob Morrow.

Hi sparklez (and welcome). I still haven’t got all the names down – this will probably take awhile.
SC, Nog and I saw that Numb3rs show last night – if I hadn’t read your recommendation here previously we probably would have zapped right past it. Getting to know our new television service seems to have been one of our home projects this past week. π
Anyhow, quite enjoyed it except for that guy’s hair – why does it have to stick up in front like that?

Maybe he secretly likes dressing up as Tintin or something.

Ivan, which guy? If you mean David Krumholtz, the math wiz character, you might remember him in an every weirder hairdo as the lead elf in “The Santa Clause”. Or as Mr. Universe in
“Serenity”, the movie made from the series, “Firefly”. Which is a great SF series, BTW!
See, more suggestions, az!

Sorry sc, I’ve no idea what these people are called – I only see them in the adverts, usually just before deciding there’s nothing on telly.

I don’t know their names either. There’s a maths wiz guy with longish curly hair and his brother has sticky-uppy-in-front dorky hair.
The main problem with all these programmes is that there is no real suspense because you know the stars of the show are not going to die and that the bad guy usually gets caught.
So yeah, it’s all pretty ‘formula’ stuff, but in some of them (House, for example) the writing and acting take it a few notches up from standard tv crap.
I miss the old BBC quality stuff like Inspector Morse and Prime Suspect, not to mention the excellent comedy. But apparently that sort of quality is a thing of the past in the UK as well.
