Over-70s only! Manchester opens playground for oldies
The UK’s first playground specifically for older people has opened near Manchester.
The “older people’s play area” in Dam Head Park, Blackley, in north Manchester, features six pieces of equipment – featuring the slogan “Never too old to play” – designed to provide gentle exercise.
Here are more photos of the “pensioners’ playground”.
Isn’t this a wonderful idea?
I like it. I do. But I just can’t picture my Mom and Dad …

I think that’s wonderful!
Just back from a skiing holiday with my parents to celebrate my father’s 70th birthday – “You don’t stop doing things because you get old, you get old because you stop doing things!”

Great quote, Johnny. And your Dad can go to the park now that he’s 70. š

What I like best about this is that people can stop by the park whenever they like and do a bit of gentle exercise that helps keep them limber and fit … they can do this while they’re out shopping or whatever and don’t have to change into gym clothes or make a fuss about it. Much like kids in a playground don’t have to.
I’m all for making daily exercise accessible and ‘user-friendly’ for everybody. And also fun. Even 15 minutes a day at the “pensioners’ playground” would be very beneficial.

I think it’s a great idea, too. I want playground equipment for me, too.
One of the benefits of having a toddler is that I can follow her around the playground to make sure she’s safe. In the process, I get to climb stuff and go down the slides. At some point, she’ll be old/big enough to climb stuff by herself, and I’ll be exiled to the sidelines.

That is such a great idea. But what I really love about it is picturing the first meeting, where the person who had the idea pitched it to the local council… can you imagine?
Good for them for giving it the go ahead!

Sadly, not.
I live in sunny Kent, and the parents in question live in Surrey, so some considerable distance.
I’m with Truce, trying to imagine the meeting where someone presented the idea makes me smile š
