On Tuesday afternoons between 1-5 pm the Casa de Pilatos (House of Pilate) has free admission. So after spending a lovely couple of hours this morning with Pipocas and the Kidlet – finally back from holidays – I met Nog to have a wander around and take a few photos, especially of the fabulous azulejos (ceramic tiles) …

OH wow. Beautiful tiles, beautifully captured. The way that light has been captured by the building to create such utter beauty is amazing. If the place was transported to the UK, it wouldn’t look anywhere near as stunning. Perfect use of location to inform design.

Those were beautiful photos. I loved the details of the tiles. I’m quite partial to the ones with the geometric patterns. They are so very cool.

I know what you mean, SL. When I used to see fabulous tiles transported to Toronto and used on houses in the Portuguese neighbourhood it never quite worked. They tended to look cheap and gaudy under a grey TO sky.
That place is just crazy with tiles, alejna, even more so than the Alcázar. Almost every wall at Casa Pilatos is covered in various tiled panels, with no two alike, which you’d think would clash and look tacky, but it’s actually quite breathtaking.
Yeah, I’d forgotten about Tuesday afternoons being free, truce. It usually costs 8 euros to get in. I’ll have to remember to stop in more often.
I think my azulejos Fotki album will appeal only to those who particularly love this type of ceramic tile work. It tends to look a bit samey if you only glance at the thumbnails, but it actually makes a nice slideshow.

Who couldn’t love them!
When I wrote up my responses to the “four” quiz that I sent to you, I completely neglected to say that one of the places “I would rather be right now” was where you are…. How silly of me!
Not merely because I think I could live quite happily in such a marvelous and wondrous place…. I would love to be there with you, Az…

Forgot to mention that my brother on a trip to Spain brought back some tiles for my mother which featured various occupations…. fish-seller, wine-maker… I can’t recall all of them, now, and one with a woman who seemed to be regaling some men in a bar… I could only think of one occupation for that tile…
My Mom had them installed on the wall under the kitchen window where they looked lovely. I told her to attach them in some way that she could take them with her if she ever had to move but she didn’t, the inevitable happened and she sold the house and left the beautiful tiles there…
