From the Why Didn’t I Think Of This Before Department … today I decided to resurrect my cute little clip-on iPod shuffle and take it to the gym with me. What a difference it made! I’d totally forgotten about it after putting it on a shelf when I came home from my first operation. It was actually while I was putting new music on my “nero” iPod the other day that I remembered about the shuffle and so I also added some of my favourites to it (with just 1GB I have to be more selective).
Anyhow … wonderful! It not only blocked out the crappy shit they play on the stereo system at the gym, but I also couldn’t hear the pilates social club idiots yakking away … bonus! I also went a bit faster and farther on The Bike today. Well, who wouldn’t when listening to such fabulously energetic stuff as this…
Hey, does this also count as a T-shirt Friday pic?

I bought my very first iPod for the gym, for much the same reasons.
Alas, it died from being stuffed down the front of my sports bra. All that *humidity* just didn’t agree with it. Ooops.
It’s amazing how the right sort of music motivates one to do that wee bit more. I have a special Walking Very Fast playlist and some slower stuff for floor exercises and core work.

Did you know that if you put your iPod (or iPhone, or any gadget really) in a container of rice it should remove any excess moisture due to spillage or sweating? I think the trick is to do it right away though, so it probably wouldn’t work for your old iPod now.
I always clip my shuffle to a t-shirt sleeve – no problem with humidity there.

My cellphone was in mt backpack and it rained so hard that the phone was soaking in several inches of water for some time before I realized it. I held the phone up and water POURED out the hole for the antenna.
I turned it on and it did nothing.
When I got to the office, took the battery off and dried it as best I could with paper towels and set it on top of my office lamp and let it dry out over the day. When I put it together, again, it worked just fine.
My T-Shirt is up, BTW http://mudpuddle.wordpress.com/2009/11/28/sausage-skin/

Isn’t it wonderful? It’s the one song David Byrne says he wishes he had written. I first heard it used during the closing credits of Grosse Pointe Blank and fell in love in an instant.
Stupid video though…

Now that you mention blocking out the Pilates Social Club I won’t be as able to feel rightously cranky about the earbud people in my gym who always say “Eh?” when I ask if they are going to use equipment or are just sitting on it.
I’m a classical music person right to the bone so almost anything on the gym stereo has always been noise to me, though a few songs now have nostalgia value after 25 years pumping iron. The only thing I really hate is a current hit called “I want to ride my bicycle.” I chant mantras to block it out.

Our gym usually has the music cranked up loud. They must be playing satellite radio because one day it will be new wave music and the next it will be what my wife and I jokingly call “old fart” music (classic rock) that we enjoy. Most of the time I tune it out, but it beats listening to the grunts and groans from the big muscle jocks while they lift (I’m more of a whimperer myself).

Aw, c’mon, those grunts are the Music of The Spheres. They are the necessary sounds of construction.
I admit some people milk it a bit. An ex boyfriend whom I trained up got quite carried away with the whole idea and became an eloquently keening Method Lifter, until the day a large fella asked him if he was having phone sex while lifting. That settled him down.

This morning I forgot to bring my shuffle to the gym with me and had to listen to the crappy music … complained about it on Twitter while I was on The Bike. Then my Twitter pal WeeRascal reminded me that I have an iPod in my iPhone, which I was using to send tweets. Boy, did I ever feel duh! 😳
I don’t actually have any music on the iPhone, but that’s easy enough to remedy. Though I still like using the shuffle because it’s a hands-free music option and I can use it on other machines. But yeah, if I stick some music on the iPhone I can have it as an “emergency” option.

I will second the rice method mentioned above. I have used this and it works wonders getting moisture out of electronics.
