Back in October, after one of the tenants next door abruptly moved back to Ireland due to a bad case of homesickness, I placed a few ads online and one of the responses I got was from a young American woman living in France who was going to be staying in Seville for awhile to do research on ants in Doñana Park (heh, an antomologist). We corresponded back and forth a bit, but in the end a very nice German guy showed up who was interested in taking the room immediately, so it went to him.  Jessica found other accommodation and moved here at the beginning of November, but told me she was still interested in seeing the apartment as Philipp will be going back to Germany at the end of February and her place wasn’t feeling very comfortable.  So we arranged to meet last weekend.

After a tour of the apartment we went out for a couple of tapas and ended up talking all afternoon. I had such a great time that yesterday I thought it would be a nice idea to invite Jessica over for dinner and make my famous pulled pork butties. A wonderful time was had by all and I am happy to have a new friend here in Seville, at least until next summer. Though I’m also going to hook her up with some kids her own age to play with, like the nice folks I’ve met on Twitter and also the Spanish girl who lives next door, Nieves. So losing that tenant actually turned out to be a stroke of luck. Cool, innit?

Today’s Photohunter theme is “music”.

When I was in Tangier earlier this year the best restaurant I visited (and visited twice over the weekend I was there) was not only exceptional because of its food, but also because of the small group of musicians that played while we ate. At first I thought they would just be distracting or noisy, but they were actually very good and enhanced the whole dining experience. Way better than musak!

You can see (and hear) them in action below the links…

learning to read

reading

In 2008 I made a “What I’ve Read” page and by the end of the year it turned out that I’d read about a book a week. So I started a new page for 2009 and was shocked to notice that by February I’d only managed to finish two books. I’d started several, but somehow kept putting them aside, which isn’t like me at all. In part I blame getting an iPhone for Christmas because my main reading time is in bed before I go to sleep, and I found myself checking email, twitter and reading blogs in bed half the time. But I think it was more to do with the not-being-able-to-focus thing (plus a few duds for book choices). It’s as if my attention span can only deal with snippets of information these days, or that I’m extra easily distracted. Even as I sit here writing this I’m “watching” a movie on TV and spacing out a lot. And so, a few days ago I decided to make a conscious effort to learn how to read again.

I’ve been putting aside a specific hour each day in which I do nothing but read. I’ve gone back to a novel that was sent to me awhile ago by our very own Sledpress (and written by her too!), and definitely not one of the aforementioned duds. And it’s really making a difference. I also think it will help with focusing in general, because even after hours in front of the computer I find I’ve spaced out so many times that I never get as much done as I’d planned to.

So I think that just as I put aside a couple of hours every day to go to the gym, I also need to start dividing up my days into “bite-sized” chunks that I can assimilate better.

When do you get most of your reading done?

cat cold

… well, I hope that it’s “just a cold”.

I went to bed for a siesta yesterday afternoon, feeling fine, and woke up 40 minutes later with a tightness in my chest and achy arms and legs. Damn. It got progressively worse throughout the evening, but I got through my two evening classes okay and then curled up with some hot tea. I think I mentioned earlier that I only had three classes this week because one of my students – a doctor – is away doing some volunteer work in Nicaragua. And it turned out that all three classes were yesterday (wish every day were like that Monday-Thursday!), which means I can do the stay in bed and drink plenty of fluids thing today.

Ah well, looking on the bright side, I usually get my annual cold around Christmas time, so this way I can get it over with and shouldn’t get another one for the rest of the winter.  I’m planning on getting some reading done but, as I’ll be stuck indoors all day, don’t be surprised if I Skype you…

julie juliaFinally got to see Julie & Julia on Sunday.

I’d heard that La Streep’s performance was magnifique! and I wasn’t disappointed. For once her penchant for bizarre accents wasn’t offputting, though when Nog first heard her speaking as Julia Child he said he was reminded of a Monty Python sketch. And I was left with a strong desire to make boeuf bourguignon and debone a duck.

Has anyone else seen it?
