cancer, life stuff

…  my life changed forever.

On May 5th 2007 I woke up with serious abdominal pains that got worse as the day went on. By the end of the week I’d been sent home twice by the emergency doctors at the private hospital I’d gone to, with them refusing to do the ultrasound I’d asked for, telling me I just had gas pains. But when I went back on Saturday evening they finally realised it wasn’t a hairball and admitted me for observation and further testing. On Sunday around midnight I was transferred to the general hospital for an emergency operation. And a couple of weeks after that I was given the diagnosis – stage IV colon cancer with metastasis to the liver (later they discovered it had also spread to the peritoneum).

So it’s been a week of retrospection and introspection, but mostly it’s been a good week of being alive and feeling healthy. Unlike my friend Gaelen, I have yet to “beat the odds”. I was given a 50/50 chance of surviving for five years and I have to say that it feels pretty damned good to have reached the two-year mark. Meanwhile, the next PET scan is coming up next month and it always feels … well, scary as hell. But today the sun is shining and I am busy working on projects at home. Just letting you know where I am. And reminding myself to enjoy every moment as much as I can.

How are you enjoying today?

Isn’t this adorable???

And no, it’s not mine. But I’m getting to play with it for a couple of days. On Monday “Málaga Manolo” was here for his class and we were talking about some of the trips that his girlfriend Victoria (my new part-time boss) was going to be taking. I was saying how when she went to Mexico it was difficult to get in touch because she hadn’t taken her laptop and only had the Blackberry, and one thing led to another so that after the class we somehow ended up over at Fnac getting this little baby for Victoria’s next trip to the US. I very generously offered to set up the netbook for her (ha, you kidding? I couldn’t wait to get my mitts on it) and it’s really been fun. It’s only about 18 x 26 cm (7 x 10 inches) and perfect for travelling. Gotta give it back tomorrow…

You Should Live in a Red House

You are adventurous and have a passion for life. You want to explore new places.

You crave love and ever lasting romance. You want to deepen your intense feelings for another person.

You don’t worry about what others think of you. You are who you are, and you’ve given up trying to be someone else.

You are quite persuasive. You know how to get your way whenever you want to… and you often want to!

[click to enlarge for full sneaky effect]

My favourite room in casa az is the living room. And my favourite feature of that room is the built-in bookcase that fills one entire wall. As you can see in this photo, that wall is at an angle, and so the bookshelves were “angled-out” to create more of a straight-line effect. But this means that if the books are actually lined up straight with the edge of the shelves they aren’t flat against the wall on the left-hand side … which leaves a perfect hiding place for sneaky little kittens.

cats, swifts

Had a bit of excitement yesterday morning when a swift flew right into the living room, in spite of the plastic mesh protection and the blinds being half-way down. I mean, what are the odds? As you can see in the middle photo (click to enlarge) there is only about a two-inch wide space between the blind and the wall. But in it flew and found itself immediately cornered by the cats…
