So I might be moving to Pajaritos street. Pajaritos is Spanish for little birds. I kind of like the sound of that. The apartment isn’t ideal. It’s smaller for the same price and doesn’t have balconies or airconditioning. But it does have a lift and a nice rooftop terrace. And I’d be living next to my long time friend, student – and also my GP – Agustín.
Am negotiating with the landlords at the moment – a couple I’ve known for years. Should know by the end of the week.
Walked around my almost maybe new terraza this evening after my class with Agustín. It felt right, like it could be home.
I can live without air conditioning

When it’s 45º?
To be honest, the first year I lived here and had air conditioning I only put it on for about an hour at lunch time and another hour in the evening before bedtime – and even then it doubled my electricity bill. The new place does have one of those portable air-con things on wheels, which I guess is better than nothing. But the other thing that isn’t great is a small two-plate electric cooker… which may be negotiable. I dunno. I only saw the place quickly the other day. I need to go back with a tape measure and take notes and talk to M & P.
Over the years I’ve had awful anxiety dreams about moving and then ending up in the wrong place… I’m just not good about leaving places or people I love.

I am glad to hear this situation may be working out. I still cannot believe your landlords…if I am in Seville, I will definitely make time to help you move!

Good luck. I hope this works out well for you.

Well, it is best to not jump on something quickly because you don’t want to spend a lot of time looking.
If it has real drawbacks…

I’ve always wondered how well those wheeled aircon units could work. But I should think they’d at least make the difference between sleeping and not sleeping when it’s stifling.

I wouldn’t sleep with the aircon on, but it’s nice to cool a room down before going to bed. Those wheeled units work well, but they’re massive and clunky and you have to keep a window half open to stick the huge exhaust tube out, so not very efficient. Plus, where to store it in winter?
Around here now most people have small heating/aircon units up on the wall like this one below. They’re perfect because they not only work very well, but you can heat or cool just one room rather than the whole house. Central heating/air con is very wasteful, I think. Plus it creates a great place for roaches to get around.

I hope it turns out to be the right spot for you.
I lived without AC for a few years when I lived in an old warehouse building on Niagara St. here in Toronto. It was OK, but I prefer it cool.

Private flats and houses here don’t have an aircon, and we get up to 40°C in summer. We have large ceiling fans in the bedrooms, which helps.
I have a balcony which I can’t use in summer, as it faces south-west and is baking hot until late. A rooftop terrace sounds nice.
I hope you can negotiate about the cooker, though.
Good luck with whatever you decide.

Well, I’ve lived without airconditioning for 16 years and was hoping for a place that’s warm in winter and cool in summer…
Anyhow, it may not happen now because the landlords have been thinking about selling and so don’t want to commit to the usual five-year lease. And although I’m not sure I even have five years left, the idea of having to go through all this again in another year or two is just not okay. So they are thinking it over now and I’m waiting to hear back, but meanwhile still looking.

Oh, sorry, a misunderstanding here, then. All homes here have a heating of some sort.
Usually, it’s central heating, powered by oil or gas. After all, the heating period is from October to April, and can be extended if it is too cold (which happened this year. I think there have only been four months this year where we didn’t need to heat.)
So yes, if aircon is heating, then you should certainly look for something that comes with aircon.

No, aircon is for cooling, which is not really a luxury item here as it’s HOT from June to September, so that even with electric fans on it’s like sitting in front of a blow dryer.
Heating is only really necessary from mid-November to mid-February and where I live now I have electric space heaters, so can just heat one room at a time. Or in theory. The balcony doors and windows are in such bad shape that in winter it’s often colder inside than out (no sun).
In a better insulated place I could get by with my space heaters, but it’s really uncomfortable without any way to cool a place down in summer, especially at midday.
