Bingo. I’ve spent my life discovering how little they do know. Some are better than others, but none really have time to know their customers any more, so when they offer odds on someone’s chance of recovery, it’s really only wild guessing.
From the various friends I know who are doctors, their estimates are based on ‘worse case scenarios’ so as to cover their own arses (for sensible reasons, since being sued is such a damaging risk for them). Also, remember its only a mathematical ‘probability’, not a life-is-unpredictable ‘certainty’. 🙂
The thing is that I mostly live in a state of semi-denial, which I find works best for me emotionally, but then I end up making less intelligent health choices in terms of diet, exercise, weight loss, etc. On the other hand, some people I know who did everything “right” have either had recurrences or are now dead…
I think my friend Gaelen has the best attitude, which is that we should help our luck along as best we can. And I don’t think that I’ve been doing that. Time for a reality check?
Well, I’m not in your shoes (probably best for both of us 😉 ). So I wouldn’t be critical, but I’m sure that whatever you do to help yourself along, at the very least can’t hurt and if it might help . .?
What do doctors know?

Indeed. It’s very difficult to put such things out of your mind. It’s always in the background somewhere.

XKCD, on the other hand, is awesome.

XKCD is the shizz. It’s amazing how much emotion is in the last frame just using stick-people drawings.
