After sorting out Azar health issues with my vet Yolanda this afternoon I felt secure enough to go out and buy my train ticket for Málaga. I’ll be spending Monday to Friday there next week mostly working, but also with some time off to dip my toes in the Mediterranean.
Once again I’ll be staying at my friend Manolo’s apartment, which I am told has undergone a total makeover since my last visit – stay tuned for new photos! And I’ve organised a vineyard visit with some very cool and interesting people – more on that later.
And so after getting the train ticket I went to the Corte Inglés to get some “old geezer” cat food for Azar (this will tide him over until his blood test results come back) and on the way out I spotted these adorable 2-3 cup bodum french press coffee makers… and well, how could I spend almost a week in Málaga without decent coffee? It was ON SPECIAL OFFER too! Because I always takes sheets and towels with me when I stay at Manolo’s there’s never any question of travelling light. I’ll also have the laptop with me and a few groceries from home, so what’s an extra coffee maker? Last time I was forced to drink instant coffee… never again!
What can’t you live without when you travel?
I love my Bodum coffee press. When my electric one broke a few years ago I pulled out the Bodum and use it all the time. It’s attractive and doesn’t take up a lot of room. I love their glasses too.

I’ve been using a Bodum french press for over twenty years now (used to have a cute cappuchino maker back in TO but sold it when I moved). It really is the simplest and nicest way to make coffee that I’ve found. This model came in a few colours and I was tempted by the orange one, but in the end went with basic black. Yes, their coffee and tea glasses are gorgeous.
(oh, and great to see you here Carol!!)

Nutritional supplements. It’s among the many reasons I don’t travel. I mean you can pack some vitamin pills OK but try staying at someone’s place and requisitioning juice and shaking up something that looks like swamp muck and chugging it (my own home brew of powdered green food, yeast, chocolate whey protein, etc.,, because nothing on the market is quite right). You can just hear the brain gears turning: “Don’t invite that weirdo back…”

After a few days, I miss having a button accordion around. I faced this problem in Halifax a couple years ago. So I found a folk music store thinking they would have squeezeboxes and I could try out a couple. I entered and saw fiddle, fiddle, fiddle, fiddle, mandolin, fiddle, guitar, guitar, fiddle, fiddle fiddle. So I asked the guy working there, “Where are your button accordions?” and he replied, “What do think this is, St. John’s? Halifax is a fiddle town.”

I have a one-serving one. I don’t use it for coffee. I use it for making my Chai tea. I heat the milk in the microwave and I put the tea in and when it is steeped I pour. I also use it to make my cocoa. I heat the milk and then add the cocoa and sugar and then foam it using the press.

Well, even though this says on the packaging that it’s a 2-3 serving one it will actually only make 1 1/2 breakfast coffee mugs worth. Which is exactly what I drink every morning, so it’s perfect.
The press foams milk? Interesting…

A decent razor – I like to give my face the day off every now and then, but do like to be able to shave properly when I want/need to.

Probably my most needed travelling companion is my blow dryer – agree that personal grooming is important.

I know Mrs BBJP regards one of our most important travel purchases as a hair dryer that we bought in Germany, so that she is not dependant on hotel stuff when in Europe.
