On Saturday morning, after having decided the previous evening that it was time to let Luna roam free, I realised it was also clearly time to put up some kitteh protection.
When I first moved here in February I decided that minimal protection was fine for the boys as the railings have a curly metal design along the bottom that would prevent any accidental slipping off the balconies, even if either of them could squeeze through the bars, which seemed doubtful. This was a far cry from the massive protection that I put up at the old casa az when I first got Loki, who was a crazy climber back then, and I had constant visions of him going “over the top” in a split second. Luna is a much calmer kitten but she is so eensy that, as you can see in the photo, could easily tumble through the railing if she leaned over too far. So it was off to the hardware store for some mesh.
This time I’ve only put it up half-way because I don’t think Luna would actually try to jump through – this is just to protect accidental falling and also put my mind at ease. And so now all the kittehs can enjoy fresh air out on the balconies and I don’t have to keep the doors closed in this lovely autumnal weather.
Haven’t let Luna out on the terraza yet – one step at a time…
Great and responsible effort. Luna appeas to be enjoying her full access to the balcony…cats are very agile so hopefully that will keep her out of trouble…

Hi Rayya and welcome. I have to say that I’ve been more “responsible” in the past, to the point of making my balconies inaccessible to me. But I think this should be enough to prevent any accidents.

I cannot imagine trying to keep an eye on both Loki and Luna on the balcony. Sort of like a video game…

just make sure she doesn’t figure out how to climb the mesh…

I hope I don’t end up eating my words, but I can’t see her wanting to do that. Luna doesn’t seem to be a climber and leaper the way Loki was when he was her age, though she loves tearing around and skidding along the floor. I guess there’s a chance that she might go “over the top” chasing a fly or something, but short of screening in the entire balcony there’s nothing I can do about that. And I like to think Luna is as clever as she is pretty. The other day I found her peering over the edge att he top of the spiral(ish) staircase and realised I hadn’t blocked that particular “danger”, so I put up some mesh. Probably an overreaction as my main worry about the staircase is that Azar, being mostly blind now, might slip and fall from the top while being chased by Loki.
I’m still going to put trellising around the terraza one of these days though. Would love to feel more secure about letting the cats out there.
