This is one of my happy-looking feet enjoying a dip in the Med during one of my summer trips to Málaga. But the truth is, this foot was less than happy – despite happy red toenails – because its owner (ME!) continuously failed to provide proper footcare over the summer months and, just like most years, by the end of June the heels were in shreds and other bits weren’t feeling or looking to great either.
But not this year! Why not? Well, unlike most winters when my not-so-happy summer feet have had time to recover, I ended up developing calluses because of the shape of the insoles of THESE SHOES, which kind of rode up on the sides and rubbed the edges of my feet until they defensively built up a whack of hard and quite painful deposits. And well, too much is enough already. I can’t have both cracked and bleeding heels along with crazily painful calluses.
So I have purchased all kinds of magic creams and exfoliants and have started lavishing attention on my usually neglected tootsies. And I think they are quite enjoying this! But I wonder why it took things getting way out of control (pain-wise) before I took action. Though it is oft said that our feet tend to be ignored until they kick up a fuss. How about you? Do you take care of your feet properly?
Have you tried Crocs?

My feet are also sensitive little soles – I was amazed to see that you also had a problem with Clarkes. I bought something similar a couple of years ago and well, ouch! I find it very difficult to get shoes that I don’t notice that I am wearing – this being all important as I have 2 Labradoodles who have walks OCD.
There are three things my feet cannot do without 1) Birkenstocks (or similar) 2) What looks like an oversized nail file for feet 3) That little stick of foot cream that is sold at Mercadona to prevent cracks (it does tricks with nails too!) – it costs about 2 Euros and is magic in a stick. If they ever sell out I might try lipbalm instead – who knows?
Without these things I am unspeakable to.

Yes, quite annoyed at getting calluses from those Clarkes – had to do with the way the insoles were shaped. Having triple-EEE feet pretty much nothing fits, but when something does it’s a bit disheartening when they don’t end up being comfortable.
Hmmm, I think I need to find this 2€ magic cream stick!

I’m on them all day, so I have no choice. The remedies, though, tend to involve athletic tape rather than buffers or creams. My remarkable Chiropractor, Dr. Bill, adjusts feet — snick, thump, twist. I come away feeling as if my feet are a Roman arch or pediment rather than something susceptible to exfoliants.

Soak your tootsies in warm water and Epsom salts for 15 minutes, rinse, pumice the hard bits and loofah the less hard bits. Rinse again and pat dry. Use Vaseline (none of those expensive moisturizers which are just money down the drain) to massage and put on an old pair of cotton socks. Repeat once a week.
If you can sleep with socks on, use a basic hand cream and moisturize your feet before bed and put the socks on.

Lovely down to earth remedies, Mudhooks. I am off to buy a loofah and vaseline – I have no doubt that my local and lovely chemist has Epsom salts. The socks will match my comfy and very practical jarmies – the luxury of getting older!
