If any of you have tried to call me on my landline in the past – oh… maybe year or so? – you would have noticed that I didn’t pick up. This was because of the addition of this little monster darling girl to the household. Turned out that, just like Azar, Morcilla has a penchant for chewing on electrical cords, especially the skinny ones, and soon enough she had discovered the two cords leading from the phone on the table over to the wall, and chomped them both in half. So I put “repair or get new telephone cords” on my To-Do list but realised Morcilla would just do it again unless I found another place to put the phone deck, closer to the phone connection and plug socket. Somehow during all this time I didn’t find a solution until my recent day trip to IKEA when I spotted this little silver shelf and thought it would be just the thing. And so it is. Got it mounted yesterday with a minimal amount of swearing (WHY IKEA have you stopped including screws with things like these???) and now all cords are (not so neatly) tucked behind the router. Out of sight, out of mind? Let’s hope so.

I think WhatsApp has made all landline and mobile phone calls obsolete!

Well this is why I was landlineless for so long – it just wasn’t a priority. Other than for Peter’s family, who only contact him by phone, nobody calls here on the landline. I do actually use my mobile a lot for calls, but will send text messages via SMS or WhatsApp more often.

WhatsApp is free for texts, voice, video and images. SMS is dead too!

Of course, when you say nobody you’re not counting telemarketers. First one came in almost straight away.

So, what you need to do is buy a couple of spider plants for the cats to chew on. It cures them of the cord/shoelace chewing thing. They may be trying to find roughage or something. This fixed all of my cord problems, and all of my friend’s cord problems. You will have to replace the spider plant periodically because it will get so ratty, but it is so worth it. I built up a nursery of them and just rotate them in and out.

Really? I have a whack of spider plants that used to hang over the balconies, which I moved to the rooftop terrace because THE CATS KEPT EATING THEM. Hmmmm…
