I can’t believe it’s been TWO YEARS since I last went to the dentist (when I got my first crown and some other work done). But an old filling next to the crown had fallen out and so back I went. I’ve mentioned before how much I love my dentist, which is probably not something most people can say, so I no longer feel the dread of impending pain and financial ruin that used to come over me before dentist visits.
This time there were two visits and on the second one Peter came with me to have his teeth looked at. Even worse than me, he hadn’t been to the dentist in over ten years (!!!), and like me, he’d lost a filling. He also had a serious cleaning done, which has made a huge difference. Now that he is working part time for We Love Tapas he has been put on the “company dental plan”. 😉
As a child, I had a “children’s dentist” who hated children. He went, I think, to the Dr. Mengele School of Dentistry (he once repeatedly froze my sister’s tongue instead of he gum and then screamed at her because she screamed in pain). The last time I went was because I had a toothache. He told me that there was nothing wrong. I ended up at another dentist with an abcess where my “non-existent cavity was.
So, aside from some absolutely mevessary visits to the second dentist, I avoided them. My final visit to the good dentist, I was confident enough to promise to come back for a yearly check-up. I called to make that appointment and found that the he had passed away. So sad. He really was a very nice man.
The next dentust was nice but a terrifying experience when the power went out mid-filling, where they had to finish using a blow-torch for light and the dentist’s hair nearly caught fire, I was sort of soured again on dentistry.
I now have a great dentist, right across the street, they don’t charge a billion $ to clean your teeth (I get a duscount because I have no insurance and get less than minimum wage salary looking after my Mom) and the spectre of Dr. Schultz has finally been expunged…
