When I was asking Big Al for oil sprayer advice (he’d just bought one for his new air fryer) somehow the topic of pepper grinders came up, how they never last, etc and he told me he’d stopped using them and uses a mortar and pestle instead. And then I happened to see this while I was out looking for a sprayer. Gotta admit it’s a bit more work, but at least it will keep on working as long as I do.Β πΒ And look! It fits perfectly in the spice cupboard next to my happy-making lazy susan.

I love the design of that! Going to look for one. He’s right about the grinders. Now that wasn’t ALWAYS true. My mother had a quilted milk-glass pepper grinder with a cast iron mechanism and that puppy was still working when I stopped speaking to her at the age of 40 something. When I was small, my job was to feed the peppercorns into the top opening, which was awkwardly small and the only flaw in its design. It had a crank on the top rather than a twisty lid. Indestructible. I don’t think anything’s been built to last for the last 30 years or so.

A crank on top sounds like a much better idea. But yeah, I love the design of this mortar & pestle. Have just uploaded a pic of it in situ… perfect for the spice cupboard.
