What a day! Went to the 6th Cuatrogatos Wine Fest in El Puerto de Santa María, which was kind of my birthday present to Peter. I say “kind of” because, although he likes wine he cannot cope with a lot of it. But as this birthday present also included a trip back to El Puerto (after far too long) and lunch overlooking the Cádiz bay it worked out for both of us. I got to check in with a lot of winemaking friends I haven’t seen in ages and it was a lovely day trip for Peter too. We started off with breakfast at a totally traditional bar next to the central market that neither of us had been to before. Then a taxi out to the Hotel Puerto Sherry, which was also somewhere we’d never been to. Anyhow, this was the view from our table at lunchtime, a beautiful moody winter sky. Good times. Out of all the recurring anxiety dreams I have (and there are plenty!) the worst are the betrayal dreams. Other anxiety dreams can leave me waking up in terror, creeped out, exhausted, concerned about my sanity etc, but the fucking betrayal dreams man… they cut to the core. Maybe because I am so often “misread” by people who project their own issues onto someone they think threatens them (often who they previously admired) by making me… well, whatever they imagine me to be. I wake up from these dreams questioning everything and everyone, especially myself, and wonder how to move forward if trust isn’t actually an option. Not that trust comes easily to me, far from it. I guess mostly it’s just so incredibly sad and deflating, waking up with this awful just been stabbed in the heart feeling. Takes a lot to recover from these fuckers. What’s your worst dream?

eslava – end of an era

I can’t remember the first time I ever went to Eslava but it must have been something like 20-25 years ago. My first post for them on Sevilla Tapas is dated February 2008 and by then it had already become a solid favourite.

And today on the last day of February 2023 I went to see owner and long-time friend Sixto Tovar on his final day at this most beloved bar before he retires. He has handed the reins over to a couple of guys who run several bars/restaurants here and no doubt they’ll keep the business going. For me it will never be the same but I think this was a smart move and I wish Sixto and his wife Rosa all the best in their next chapter. Missing them already.
