flamenco theatre

So this was a lovely surprise. Got a text this week from my old pal Javier who managed the Flamenco Museum for many years before moving to Madrid to start up a flamenco venue with his brother there. Turns out he’s back in Sevilla and, again with his brother, has a new flamenco place here. This one is quite different from the usual “tablaos” as it is in the old Teatro Quintero (now Teatro Pathé) with an elegant bar in the lobby and red velvet tiered seating.

Javier told me his concept is to offer a flamenco experience in Sevilla that would be as much a draw for locals as tourists and he invited me to come and see the show. I loved it. The performance is more theatrical than classic, with choreographed bits similar to flamenco ballet, interspersed with traditional “palos”. Another difference is that the singers and guitarist are miked and during one or two pieces recorded music is used.

Teatro Flamenco Sevilla shares the space with Pathé and has a daily show at 6.30 pm, after which the theatre programme takes over. General tickets are 25€ and Premium ones (including reserved seating and a drink in the bar) are 34€. Tickets for Sevilla residents are 15€.

cañabota

I am so happy for my friends at Cañabota for winning their first michelin star. It’s not really my thing (going to michelin star restaurants) but they are understandably over the moon so I find myself caught up in their joy. I’ve known Juanlu for about ten years, have watched his progress and have seen how he and his amazing team – including chef Marcos, sous chef Javi and Juanlu’s father Pepe –  have stuck together through good times and bad. A lot of hard work and dedication has gone into making Cañabota what it is today. Now I just have to see if I can get a booking for my birthday…

words of love and wisdom

I feel truly blessed to know so many wonderful people here in Sevilla and Emilio at Casa Moreno is one of them. The walls of this tiny bar, tucked away behind an equally tiny abacería, are festooned with handwritten notes that he has written over the years. One day I am going to go in during a quiet time and read them all, along with a sherry or two of course.

flamenca kitchenEva and the two Javis (Abascal & Vargas)

Although I have been invited to a few of Eva’s @FlamencaKitchen gastronomic events that she hosts as El Sur de las Estrellas (since such activities became allowed once again), I remained cautious and had to turn them down because they were before I was fully vaxxed. Happily Eva remembered me for the final event of the year which, as usual, took place at Platea Odeón, an old theatre space upstairs in the magnificent antigua Córdoba train station building.

This time my friend Javi Abascal and his new partner at Plato Jondo, chef Javi Vargas, were in the spotlight and we enjoyed an interview led by Eva, followed by some questions and comments from the audience. Then we were treated to canapés prepared by the two Javis, with live music and lots of El Sur cerveza. I didn’t stay too long once the food started coming out as this also meant people were gathering in the bar area and, although it is a well-ventilated space, I was aware that my booster still needed some time to kick in properly. But it was a lovely time seeing so many friends again.
