no smoking!

This is the beginning of WEEK 13.

Cool, eh? It was quite hard at first, for both of us (Nog and I both quit smoking on the same day – November 5th). And we do still get occasional ‘jonesing’ moments. But the benefits are far outweighing the difficulties.

For example, what we didn’t spend on cigs for two months paid for our posh hotel in Barcelona. Also, we both feel so much better physically, mentally and emotionally.

I think Nog has had the harder battle as he was dealing with a 37-year-old habit. I didn’t start smoking until I was 36 (duh!) and so for me it was more about changing behaviour patterns than actually feeling addicted to nicotine. Still, we both went through quite a rough time at first and appreciate that we could never have done it alone.

You know what they say – misery loves company. 😉

But more than that it’s been the daily mutual support that has kept us going.

So . . . yay for us! f_bubbly.gif

bum.jpg Excellent Grauniad article.

Women who fixate on their weight, unless we’re dealing with eating disorders, are not intelligent. Intelligence is not bestowed at birth, assessed through childhood and fixed until death. It is an aggregate of what you’ve got and what you do with it.

If you chuck it all away counting calories and wondering what size a Gap 2 really is in English, then that does not sit oddly atop your intelligence, like a monkey on a camel. The act of concentrating on trivia locks your mind like a bandsaw in one direction. It precludes the kind of inquiry that might make you extend yourself. It simply makes you less intelligent.

I know that might sound a bit harsh but I like the no-nonsense approach of what the writer has to say. Clearly when we are doing something stupid we are not being ‘intelligent’.

50thbday.jpg

It’s finally here!

It’s about 9.30 on birthday morning and I am sitting all snug and warm in bed using Nog’s laptop and being totally spoilt. Nog has brought me some lovely hot coffee and a plate of our favourite arabic pastries for brekky. Mmmm . . .

Later on we are going to open some f_bubbly.gif and then go out for lunch at our favourite restaurant – it might even be warm enough to sit outside on the terrace.

And of course there is still the Barcelona trip to look forward to (next Friday). f_wow.gif

I’m also thinking about what ‘being 50’ means to me. Sure, you can say it’s just a number, but I think it’s quite something that I’ve made it this far and feel that this should mark some sort of turning point in my life. At least it’s a time to take stock and finally get to work on all those things I’ve been putting off, as well as accepting that I’m not actually young anymore and need to take better care of myself.

I was considering having a mid-life crisis but then decided that would be somewhat overly optimistic. Anyhoodle, welcome to my birthday – help yourself to some bubbly and pastries (there’s more in the kitchen).

Glad you could stop by. f_cheers.gif

It’s my turn!

I’ve been sniffling and sneezing for the past two days and my eyeballs feel like they are way too big for their sockets…

I used to always get my ‘annual Christmas cold’ between Christmas and New Year, though for the last two years I haven’t had a cold at all. Guess it’s about time. And it’s actually not bad timing as it should be gone by Christmas Day.

Meanwhile, as I am not a man with a cold I won’t be stopping by with fifteen-minute updates. 😉

hungry.jpg Calorie Restriction

I want to find out what it looks, feels, and tastes like to commit to the ultimate in dietary trade-offs: a lifetime lived on the brink of starvation, in exchange for the promise of a life span longer than any human has known.

This article totally creeped me out. Imagine how totally obsessed, and ultimately uninteresting, one would have to become in order to maintain this sort of lifestyle.
