So the other day I came across a site where you could “hire a local friend” while travelling in various cities, who would show you around and make your experience less touristy, blah blah… and then I thought this would be perfect for Peter. Happily he thought so too, and so for the past couple of days I’ve been working on getting a new blog and social media stuff set up for him. Peter’s been busy writing content (not published yet) and we’ve both been talking about the various ways he could take this new venture. I mean, there are lots of different specialised outings in Seville he could offer, as well as day trips by train or bus. This is very exciting! So go on and follow his blog, twitter and facebook accounts!

May the fourth isn’t just Star Wars day (may the fourth be with you!),
it’s also Keith Haring’s birthday.

Love this google doodle made in his honour.

copyright confusion & facebook faux pas

Yesterday I found myself tagged on my Sevilla Tapas Facebook account in about ten photos, which then showed up in my timeline, and after that my notifications became cluttered with comments on these “photos of me” by people I don’t know. And they weren’t even photos of me, but of tapas from a local bar. So I spent about 15 minutes tracking down all the photos, removing the tags, and then wrote to the women who posted them, asking her to please not do that again. And I also wrote an entry on my Facebook timeline that said: “Please stop tagging me in photos I am not in just to promote your business. Thank you.”

I mean, it’s bad enough when people leave links on my timeline to stuff that is clearly just blatant self-promotion, and not to something that is being shared because someone thinks I’d be interested in it. But tagging people in photos like this is actually an abuse of the Facebook tagging system. It’s meant to be used to let someone know you’ve posted a photo of them on your FB page, not as an attention-seeking cheap trick to get people to look at your stuff.

Anyhoodle, my friend Del (aka WeeRascal) replied to this – probably because he doesn’t like me dissing Facebook  😉 – by referring to the collages I did of those wonderful old photos of Semana Santa in Sevilla the other day, one of which I also posted here on casa az, which have my ©azahar-sevilla.com watermark on them. He questioned the ethics of putting my copyright on other people’s photos, and at first I thought I’d done something terribly wrong. But then I realised that they were actually collages of photos I’d taken at the exhibit – a public place – and not of copyrighted images I’d found online. And well, since I wasn’t around in 1885, I reckoned it was pretty clear that I wasn’t trying to take credit for the photos. But it does seem like a bit of a grey area. What do you think? Both about the annoying Facebook tagging issue and the copyright confusion.

photo albums, photos

Well, I did it! I’ve chosen a (for now) photo theme and have started uploading pics to my new photo site. It’s something that I’ve been planning on doing for the past couple of years but the idea of re-uploading the thousands of photos on my old Fotki site was just way too daunting. Meanwhile, I haven’t put anything new up on Fotki for ages because I knew I didn’t want to stay with it. So I was stuck! But I have now bitten the bullet and will – probably very slowly – start making the switch-over.

To start with I’m just randomly uploading albums and dating them from when they first appeared online. But I’m not sure about something. Should I have the thumbnails open up full-size on a separate page like they do on Parc Güell, with comments open on the main post? Or should I have it set up like on La Pedrera, where each thumbnail opens onto its own blog page with a clickable half-size photos, where comments can be left?

I think the first option is better, just to keep things simple, but I’d like to hear what you think. It’s not ideal as I would love people to have slideshow or scroll options to view the photos full-size, but maybe I’ll find a theme that allows that further down the line. Right now I just wanted to get started or I’ll never do it.
