cat food, cats

So well anyhow… what a day! Which actually started off last night when I realised that, after opening the last bag of cat food in the house, that it had been slashed open. At first I didn’t think a lot about it (screaming cats demanding dinner) thinking maybe this bag got accidentally sliced by a knife when opening the packing box. But then this morning I remembered that I had actually bought two bags of cat food a few weeks ago, had taken them to the checkout myself, and then had them delivered along with the rest of my stuff. The first bag I opened was fine, this was the second one (which has been in the original delivery bag and in a cupboard all this time). At first I didn’t even notice it had been slashed until this morning when I saw cat biscuits all around the dishes. I tried to rationalise it, thinking there must have been some accident… BUT of course, if I saw a bag of any sort of human food had been opened before arriving at my home, I sure as hell wouldn’t eat it.

So of course the obvious thing was to go to the shop and get a new bag of food. Except today was “one of those days” which happens from time to time and, as an agoraphobic, I try not to push it unless I absolutely have to. And so I called my friend @svqconcierge (aka ovenless Peter), who happened to be going out shopping this afternoon, and he did me the big favour of picking up a fresh bag of cat food. EXCEPT it turned out the shop was sold out of the usual stuff… long story short, he bought something “similar” and brought it to me. Not ideal, but better than giving my cats possibly contaminated food!

What does this have to do with the famous Marcella Hazan 4-ingredient tomato sauce you ask?

adopt a cat, cats, sevilla

caturday march 27 2021

This pretty girl isn’t mine, but she could be yours. A friend of my neighbour found her in the street, without a chip. She is very sweet and affectionate but the person who found her isn’t allowed to have pets in her apartment and needs to find her a home as soon as possible. If you are interested or know someone in the Sevilla area who would like to adopt this little darling leave a message here or DM me on my Sevilla Tapas Twitter.

the cat (1)

On the way home from a long lunch that ended with 2 for 1 happy hour pisco sours I saw this cat lying on the sidewalk next to a very busy road and cycle path. At first I thought it might be dead because it was a very strange place to take a nap, but then I saw his ears twitch. Then I thought he must be sick, because no healthy cat would flop down in a place without shelter with people, bars, bicycles – and dogs! – constantly passing by. I felt terrible just walking away, so I decided to find him some food and, if he wouldn’t eat it, then I’d know he was sick and then… I don’t know! I guess call animal protection services. I hadn’t thought that far ahead. So I found a supermarket and bought a tin of wet food, thinking by the time I got back it was likely the cat would be gone, but nope. He was still there, sleeping. UNTIL I put the tin of cat food under his nose. Then he popped up and proceeded to chow down.

I stayed with him while he ate, eventually moving the tin next to a tree, because he kept pushing it all over the sidewalk with his nose. Meanwhile people stopped to admire him and one woman told me that the cat “lived” in an abandoned house a few doors away, and took me to see it. And what do you know? There was a big plastic tub of dried food on the doorstep, another full of water beside it, and a hole in the door for the cats (apparently he doesn’t live alone) to get in and out. So I had worried for nothing.

the cat (3)

As you can see, he is quite a beauty and clearly not starving or sick. He didn’t even finish the tin of food, though I’m sure it was the nicest meal he’s had in a while. Instead he stopped to groom himself before giving me a parting glance over his shoulder and dashing through three lanes to traffic to a building site across the road. The end.  🙂

(for one horrid moment I thought the end of the story would be that the cat got run over, but it seems like he’s been doing this for awhile)
