purple

Today’s Photohunter theme is “purple”.

I am reminded of the striking purple robes worn by the nazarenos of the La O Brotherhood during Semana Santa. Here is one depicted on a new bottle recycle bin here in Sevilla.

I am pondering the extreme weirdness of adorning a bottle recycle bin with the image of a member of an ecclesiastical order.

Well, the Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence, maybe.

Are they for Pope bottles? Bwahahahaha!

    Mine is up…

That, if I DO say so myself, was Zoomer-worthy… Should I be proud of that?

Yes, purple is the color of the Semana Santa and the Santo Entierro :)

That is a recycle bin? Wow!

I like that. Of course if we tried to do it in Britain it would take 30 seconds for someone to object to the subject matter or vandalise it.

scary – like KKK in disguise.

  7. April 18, 2009 10:35 am

man, that would scare most children…

    “Are they for Pope bottles?”

Well, I’m not sure if you should be proud Mudhooks, but I know that zoomer will be envious (actually that did make me laugh). :)

The other Semana Santa bottle recycle bins are more abstract, Sledpress, and yes, the idea is extremely weird.

Though not quite as weird as nazarenos onna stick.

Kids love nazarenos here, BB, because they usually hand out sweets. Children also collect wax from the candles and have a multi-coloured “Semana Santa ball” by the end of the week.

I’m not sure when the pointy hat thing started, but the KKK definitely stole this image. The anonymity it provides is because one should be humble while doing penance, not showing off to the world how pious you are.

Only nazarenos carrying candles wear the cardboard cone in their hoods. The ones carrying crosses wear the hoods “smurf style” (heh, thanks for that one, Del).

Thanks for the detailed description of the Nazarenos in the comments thread. That definitely makes them way less scary than the initial visual impression gave me of them!

Good point, YTSL. I’ve now linked “nazarenos” in the post to that comment.

Yep, I’d bet folding money that I’m the only Photohunter to post a pic of a slit-eyed, one-horned, praying purple penitent. :)

(hope I’m not the only one who remembers that song)

I came to your photohunt entry first today, after I saw your comment as I was strolling up the huge list of entries. “What!” I thought. “No cats? The boys wouldn’t let you dye them purple? (As if you would)”

    Pretty amazing image, az.
