When does it start?
For the past 4-5 days it’s gone up to about 21ºC in the afternoon. Last Saturday when Peter and I went out for tapas in the late afternoon was the first time I wore sandals this year. But since then I’ve been wearing shoes again … and today I wondered why.
If this was the beginning of November and 21ºC I’d definitely still be wearing sandals. But going in reverse (from cold to warm) it seems to require more than a couple of warm days to make the change.
Also, there seems to be an unwritten rule that people here don’t wear sandals before Semana Santa (Easter week), which is absurd. I don’t fall under this rule as I’m a foreigner and basically people expect me to be a bit weird. So I will be comfortably wearing a skirt with sandals in March when it’s 27º while other women are sweating in tights and shoes.
Any strange clothing rules where you live?
[note: on 3 March I found these!]

There’s an old fashioned saying here,
‘N’er cast a clout ’til May is out.’
But I think that was well before global warming. But there maybe some truth in it as the worst flu I ever had was caught after sitting around outside with friends on a warm April day, all of us in T shirts!
I suppose traditionally, people may have has slightly weakened immune systems at the end of a long winter.

Well, that makes some sense, but what about not wearing white before/after certain dates?

I think it makes more sense to discourage wearing white during certain meals.

There is that whole “no white shoes after Labor day (first Monday of September) and before Memorial Day (last Monday in May-ish)” thang.
And the “no purse at a job interview” one (now, that one’s just stupid — where am I supposed to hide my house keys, eh?)
But, then, there’s no more of that “ladies always where white gloves” crappola! 🙂

White shoes should probably be banned full stop.

White doesn’t look great against any sort of ultra pasty white skin colour. Just like mine at present!

I avoid white because I can’t keep it clean long enough to leave the bedroom. I’m with Ivan on that rule.
Otherwise, aren’t all “clothing rules” weird? I am pretty much living in ignorance of them all. My rule is, it should be comfortable, whatever it is.

Yes those red sandals look much nicer!

Don’t they? I have a black pair and might look for red ones this year. They are Mephistos – the most comfortable sandals in the world. Cute too.

I wear my sandals come rain snow or shine. My feet are always warm and I don’t wear socks.

Well hey! I was out shopping earlier and found a pair of red Mephistos like the ones in the pic. Well, slightly different in that they are a bit sleeker, suede instead of leather and the red bit that attaches at the side goes round to the back of the sandal. And the sole is a bit curvy, so they look more stylish and not quite so “Birkenstock Hippie”.
But the most important thing is that they are sooooooo comfortable – like walking on sunshine. 🙂
As it’s 25º this afternoon, getting a new pair of sandals seemed like a good thing to do.

‘N’er cast a clout ’til May be out.’ refers to May blossom not the month of May, our May tree has yet to flower. We have had beautiful weather for about three weeks, a nice 22° C and no flies.
