And so I’ve been thinking about what it means to be actually in my fifties now. Feels a bit unreal, to be honest. Kind of like something that happens to other people. But of course I’m glad to have made it to another birthday and today, unless Nog has something special planned, I think I’ll just buy a bottle of
and enjoy this last day of the holiday season with a good book or a film and some of my favourite popcorn (my friend guspemar picked some up for me when he was in New York last week). And I may even get round to changing the only-a-woman-in-her-50s-would-be-caught-dead-wearing frumpy brass buttons on my pretty new M & S red cardy , so that I can finally wear it.
It’s the custom in Spain (or so I was once told) that the birthday person buys everyone in the bar a drink, not the other way round, so ever since that first birthday in Salamanca that cost me a small fortune, I’ve pretty much stayed clear of bars on the 7th of January. Of course, virtual bars are quite a bit more economical (well, except for the buying a computer bit), so please come in and make yourself at home… and welcome to my birthday!

Happy Birthday! Can I buy you a virtual drink?

Happy Birthday – and in honor, i’m treating myself to a bit of good irish spirits before bedtime! And if i get to Sevilla? I can fill a suitcase with Mr. Redenbachers finest (love the stuff, too – i recently lost 75 lbs, and this was a key part of my nutritional plan!)

Yay, how exciting! Two new visitors (welcome daisy and Tony!) and lots of old friends stopping by – what a fabulous birthday so far, and it’s only 6 am. Yeah I know I should still be asleep but I’ve been doing the insomnia thing for awhile now, as nightowl Dan knows (hey dude – you gonna let me win at scrabble as a birthday treat?).
Anyhow … yes, I did wonder about that ‘custom’, Tony. Though once I threw a big party here for my 40th birthday and although everyone brought a little gift (which I hadn’t expected) nobody brought any booze (eep!). So they had obviously expected the birthday girl to provide all the drinks. Luckily I had recently stocked up the ol’ bodega but there was nothing left by the end of the night. π¦
Thanks alejna, I’ll have the virtual drink now and a real one in, say, about 7 hours or so. Gotta go pick up the cava (and also the popcorn) first. Which I will do after a leisurely brekky out at the Horno as I must have the traditional arabic birthday brekkie pastries. The big sales start today too, so I may actually be out for awhile.
You are very welcome to come and visit, daisy. I love having visitors and especially taking them out for tapas. A word of warning – don’t pack the popcorn in with your clothes or they will reek of Orville’s the whole time you’re here. Oh, and also watch out for the dreaded popcorn lung. Hmmm, I’ll have to ask nursemyra if they have Orville’s in Oz as she is planning to come here in June …
Many pleasant and joyful surprises sound good to me, Woodpigeon! π
I would have changed the hideous buttons ages ago, truce, but there are 15 of the buggers and I hate sewing on buttons. But it’ll be a whole new cardy with pretty mother of pearl buttons on it.
First big decision of the day is whether I get up and make coffee now or try and get another hour or so of sleep. . .

happy birthday!!!! I had no idea, you sly dog. if you’d told me I would have put a b’day pressie in with the not-chrissy one.
and no I don’t think we have orville’s here but I’ll check out the specialty shop in glebe.
daisyfae and tony are popping up everywhere together. I think they’re ‘doin’ the wild thang’ on everyone else’s blog and sometimes they have a menage a trois with upset waitress too π

Hi Blues! Yeah, I guess it does, especially the ‘still here’ part. I’ve decided that I’m going to really make this year count. π
Yep, just two silly numbers, dq. But they add up to 7, which used to be my lucky number when I was a kid. Maybe it still is!
You know, nursemyra, that not-crissy prezzie you sent me (very sweet of you) just might come in handy if I decide to make cocktails out of that Absolut I bought in Gibraltar. I was over at daisyfae’s trailer park yesterday – ooooh, mΓ©nage Γ trois, eh? We’re just missing upset waitress now…
So, went out for birthday brekkie and it was great. Also saw one of my ‘street guys’ and bought him brekkie too.
Then did a bit of shopping for birthday lunch and made a quick stop at guspemar’s to pick up the popcorn. And now I’m over at ai MaricrΓΊ having a little birthday glass of white wine (while the cava chills at home). Even managed to find a WIFI connection!
And I also bought myself a very nice prezzie – the newesst Terry Pratchett book called Making Money. I saw it the other day at Fnac and was going to wait until it came out in paperback, but hell, it’s my birthday and I needed a book and it’ll go just perfect with the bubbly & Orville’s. So there!
Boy, this sitting out at a bar and being online thang is kewl!

I’m back home now and OMG I can’t believe how I’ve managed to live without Orville’s for so long. It’s going down a treat with the cava and the new Pratchett. And John Fahey playing in the background (thanks again Blues!).
It’s also the last day for the pretty Christmas tree …

Happy birthday to you! Now, what time do we get to beat on the Pinata? I really like to beat on things stuffed with candy. And I don’t think of being 50 is old. Being 50 means you are a half of a century. π

sounds like a perfect day – and thanks for the popcorn warnings.
as for tony? he was stalking nursemyra, and i was stalking nursemyra, so it’s coincidence. and upset waitress? we’re long lost sisters (so that menage a trois thing is TOTALLY trailer park i guess..)
