I came across this old post from last year on Letters Home the other day. Oh how I wish everyone had a ‘recent comments’ widget for people just passing through or for when I’m just having a quick look around a few blogs without using my feedreader. In fact, I probably would have just read the comment to this post on my feedreader without clicking on the post itself. But seeing it on ian’s sidebar I clicked on the comment and saw the original post. Anyhoodle … it was all about things ian misses from the places he used to live after having moved on to somewhere else.
Like ian, I’ve lived in a few different places since leaving my birthplace Winnipeg, Canada (aka Winterpeg) at age 25. Since then I’ve lived in Toronto, Bristol in England, and Salamanca & Seville in Spain. Here is my list of things I miss …
Winnipeg
- ummm . . .
Toronto
- my friends Darlene, Adrienne, David, Donna, Dolores and Carol
- the restaurants, the restaurants, the restaurants…
- wood-oven baked bagels
- the view of downtown TO and the lake from my 26th floor apartment balcony
- the rep cinemas showing everything from oldies to the newest indie films
- the various neighbourhoods that all have their own ‘special something’
- Sunday shopping
Bristol
- my friend Lizzie
- the snooker club across the street from my flat
- the cinemas and restaurants on the waterfront
- the Downs, Clifton Village, the annual Jump-up Street Festival
- Marks & Spencer
- the Clifton Suspension Bridge
Salamanca
- the Plaza Mayor, which is the most beautiful one in all of Spain – I used to live a two-minute walk from there
- running in the mornings by the river next to the old Roman bridge
- the storks
- Mesón Escudo and Marín (my two favourite tapa bars)
And now . . . what I love about living in Sevilla
- my apartment with six balconies, with this view and that view
- the fabulous tapa bars
- wearing sandals 8 months out of the year
- the breathtaking beauty of Sevilla
- being able to live quite well on a rather small income
- the laid-back attitude of most people who live here – they got it right (well, except if you ever need a plumber, etc)
There are still some things I miss, like bagels and sour cream and Orville Redenbacher’s popcorn and parsnips … also not being able to see many films in original version at the cinema. Though after fifteen years of never watching television I finally have a service that allows me to watch a lot of stuff in English. This is cool. Also, having broadband helps.
Just to say that I’ve finally found the place in the world that feels like my true and real home, a place where I belong. And I wouldn’t trade that even for sour cream or all the Orville Redenbacher’s in the world.
Thanks, ian, for inspiring me to think and write about this.
What things do you miss about places you’ve left?
Just found this blog entry by chance (half the time I don’t know what I’m doing) and LOVE your list on things you miss. I’ve moved five times as a family of four, all in the US, all due to corporate positions. And it’s funny how much I miss a place right after leaving it. And my list is unremarkable in terms of exoticism: we’ve lived in NYC, Bloomfield, NJ; Charlotte, NC; Orlando,FL; LA, CA; and St Loius, MO. I am going to work on my list now, too and post it. Thanks for your idea from someone else’s idea…ah, the things that make the world go ’round!

I should do a similar list about Ottawa vs. where I’m living now. Unfortunately, the list of what I miss about Ottawa is fairly short. One item, actually: Shawarma King. Not much of a list, eh?

the Plaza Mayor looks gorgeous!
and I’ve added a “recent comments” widget as per your demand 🙂

Thanks, az!
I used to live two minutes from the Plaza Mayor in Salamanca as well, but it was only for a month in the summer when I was taking a Spanish course. What a beautiful city.

Not many things and places that I really miss. But among them would be Hyde Park early in the morning, the Science and Natural History Museums, and Greenwich Park in London; and St Fagan’s Folk Museum, the Neath Valley waterfalls, Swansea Marina, and the view from my bedroom window in Wales.

I still miss being able to see proper hills on the horizon 😦
Spotted Orville Redenbacher’s popcorn – the microwave sort in two flavours – in the wee local shop next to where I work.

Hello oh and welcome! I hope you stop by again with a link to your blog and your list. 🙂
Well, your Ottawa list is longer than my Winnipeg one, WC. What, not even the Rideau Canal?
I think a month or so in Salamanca is just about the right amount of time, ian. At least, I started getting ‘claustrophobic’ after awhile, which is why I ended up moving to Sevilla. My flat was in c/Libreros in front of the famous university façade (with the frog with a skull on its head).
Yes, the Plaza Major really is something, nursemyra. Apparently the one in Madrid is based on this one, though it’s much bigger and less charming.
Yeah, I miss places in London too, Nog, but they don’t ‘count’ for me because I’ve never lived there.
Really, Teuchter??? The ‘smart pop’ 94% fat free kind? My mule (code name: pipocas) returns tomorrow so I should be set up for awhile, but this is definitely good news for future deliveries.

I’ll peruse the packet more closely next time I’m in the shop, az – and will happily despatch emergency supplies if necessary.
Is there a way of seeing the Salamanca univ frog? It sounds 😎

Thanks, Teuchter! 🙂
Here is a good website I found showing the very intricately carved façade of the University in Salamanca.
Images of the University
Scroll down to where they mention the frog and click to enlarge the photo on the far right.
It is apparently good luck if you can find the frog with the skull on its head … I tried for months and couldn’t. Then one day I was walking home (my apt was across the street and next to the cloister) and saw someone with a huge camera and tripod set up … I followed what his camera was pointing at and saw the frog! So I guess that didn’t count – dang!
Also, it’s actually a toad which has some special meaning, sitting on a skull. I was once told about it but now can’t remember…

St. Fagans eh Nog?
I know someone who works in the gardens there – small world.

The Rideau Canal is an overrated, mosquito-infested, West Nile disaster waiting to happen.

I’ll take your word for it, WC. Especially about the mosquitos. But isn’t it pretty in winter? I thought everyone went there to skate in winter.

Oh, and on the ‘new’ cathedral façade in Salamanca you can find an astronaut …

NO, it is f*cking frigid in the winter and not worth the inevitable frost bite.

What a fine way to remind oneself that life is worth living to the fullest, always.

It was actually very nice to think back on the places I’ve lived and remember what was very special about each one.

Hi Mimiii and welcome.
It’s years since I’ve been back to Salamanca and I can understand why you miss it.
I found the frog on the skull by accident – a tourist was aiming his huge cameral lens at it while I was walking by and I happened to glance in that direction – so I don’t know if that still counts for good luck.
Did you see the astronaut on the ‘new’ cathedral?
