This is turning into one of my very favourite tapa bars, thanks to guspemar (though he’s actually never been there himself). The thing is, Wednesday evenings are typically when Nog & I go out for tapas. Places are usually not as busy mid-week and I finish my evening classes with guspemar at 8.30, which is also early enough to still find either a table or space at the bar, depending on where we go. And it’s always so nice to come out of class and find Nog waiting for me. . .
Since last summer, guspemar & family have taken up temporary residence in a nice apartment near the Plaza Nueva while their fabulous rooftop duplex is being renovated and so that’s where Nog has been meeting me on Wednesdays. And Enrique Becerra is just around the corner from there on calle Gamazo (which is actually choc a bloc with fabulous tapa bars) so we’ve been heading in that direction more often than not on ‘tapa evening’. Also, you may recall that this is where I had my birthday lunch this year, and when Nog & I showed up without a reservation with the restaurant fully booked we were shown to a lovely small private dining room upstairs and were treated very special – it was lovely.
We were there again this past Wednesday and tried a couple new tapas as well as having one of our favourite dishes, the grilled beef tenderloin with garlic, and as a special treat they topped it with succulent jamรณn serrano and even gave us an extra plate of their wonderful crispy chips (mmm…)
So I thought they deserved a special mention here. I know most of the waiters by now but the other day when we walked in the manager was in the bar and said to me ‘hey, aren’t you the chica with the blog?’ and so I also got a nice photo of him in the downstairs dining room. Along with these pics (photos 23-27).
The restaurant also has a very nice website that you can visit here.
I’m developing a need to find out if we have a tapa bar here in Perth – we have restaurants which are based in most other cultures in the world.

Yes, it’s quite a gorgeous building, uw. According to the website the restaurant is “located in two 17th century houses, unified and restored at the beginning of the 20th century. One of the building’s outstanding features are the marble columns, some of which come from the nearby Roman city of Italica (2nd century BC).”
Good luck with finding tapa bars in Perth and Sydney. I’ve never managed to find a truly authentic tapa bar outside of Spain but you guys might have better luck. Don’t forget to send photos!

Okay, that does it. This posting has made me long to return to Spain, especially the photos of the restaurant.
Paella at 4:00 a.m. (along with everyone else). Dark, dark Spanish wine. The incredible Mudeacute;jar style architecture in a country where “old” means Medieval…
I want to go back!

I remember now when we talked about how different it was back then in the Franco era … you really have to come back! There is even a nice comfy Ikea sofa bed on offer … as long as you’re not allergic to cats.

I was just cleaning out my images file and found a few photos taken at Becerra a month ago that I forgot to put up – they are photos 28-32.
