Remember when I was wondering what would happen to all my online stuff when I die?
Well, Lisa over at Cybercoven took it further and actually wrote up a will protecting her writing. She downloaded Neil Gaiman’s simple will for creative people, made a few changes, and now has all her stuff in order.
So I am now going to do the same. I don’t really have any intellectual property to protect, but I would like to know that my blogs and social media stuff won’t just be left stuck out there. I’ve already had an offer from someone willing to take care of Sevilla Tapas. For the rest I’ll mostly need someone to either maintain or delete accounts. Feels weird to be doing this but I think it’s better to deal with it while I am still well & healthy.
How about you – have you made a will?

I made one after I was divorced, and revised it after my ex-husband died, since it made provisions for him. My Albino Ex is still my executor and major beneficiary since I have never known anyone who was more level headed about money.
It is interesting how thinking about the terms of will steers your brain into channels you might not otherwise explore. Suddenly I was considering, not just how much I cared for someone whom I considered as the object of a bequest, but how well they’d manage whatever I left them. We all know people who spend money on crap that won’t even bring them pleasure for very long, or let deadbeats sponge it off them, and others who will spend it well whether on security or honest joy.
As for an intellectual/online will I haven’t tackled the issue yet. I don’t even know what to do about all these books.

What about your own novels, Ms Barcroft?
I haven’t thought about my personal belongings. I suppose if I am still sharing my apartment with someone I’ll just leave everything to them if they want it. I sure don’t have to think about leaving money to anybody. Though I should have some legally binding agreement about the cats.

I did include a clause about the care and placement of my cats.
I never took the Jane Barcroft novels very seriously though I should probably spell out that my Albino Ex gets the copyrights; he loves them more than anything I ever did because he got to be a character in them (who doesn’t love that?) The real creative work I tried to do when I was younger doesn’t matter to anyone but me, I guess.

Hmmm – I have no intellectual property or on-line presence worth the worry.
As a parent though, wills seemed pretty important to Mrs. BBJP & I. The weird part was being asked to consider what we wanted to happen with our estate(s) if both of us AND both of our children happened to die at the same time – most odd – and there didn’t seem to be an option for “don’t care”

Since Jim was in the Navy, the Will thing is pretty much a given. I mean, the military does not let you deploy without making a will. Since he was doing it, I did too. Right now we have holographic wills that leave everything to Jesse, our son. As far as on line presence, what the heck. I suppose I ought to download and preserve my words somehow, but it’s not that big of a deal to me. There isn’t anything active in terms of accounts and such going on, since I never bothered to do any of the side bar advertising stuff.

Actually, given my past history, I have thought of this quite a lot, and in particular I was worried about my written journals. I have spoken to a friend about them, but I haven’t spoken to anyone about actually doing anything with my blogs and other social media sites. I should move from the thinking stage to the doing stage…
