dop estepa, extra virgin olive oil, olive oil, sevilla, spain

Yesterday I had the privilege of being invited to the presentation of DOP Estepa’s freshly harvested 2025 extra virgin olive oil with a tasting menu created by chef Ezequiel Montilla from Restaurante Alma in Puente Genil, Córdoba. It took place at the top of the Setas in one of their bright and airy showrooms.

We tasted 3 different EVOOs, which had been used to make our starter, main course and dessert, and we were encouraged to also add a little more to our dishes. I thought it was a very interesting way of presenting olive oil, similar to a wine & food pairing, as it gave us a clear way of relating to the different oils. Afterwards we were given a bottle of their new unfiltered en rama oil, which I am keen to try because their coupage “Estepa Virgen” is my every-day extra virgin olive oil at home. A very educational and delicious afternoon.

coloquio aove

With my fellow academicos (Academia Sevillano Gastronomía y Turismo) at the first colloquium for Year of EVOO held at the Caja Rural del Sur Foundation. “EL AOVE DE SEVILLA, HOY” was a timely topic given the challenges the industry is facing at the moment.

Participating in the event (photo) were Isabel Solís, territorial delegate of the Ministry of Agriculture, Water, Fisheries and Rural Development; Moisés Caballero, general secretary of the Governing Council of the DOP Estepa, Manuel Félix Moreno, president of Opracol, and Eduardo Martín Jiménez, general secretary of ASAJA Sevilla. Our academica Begoña Amurrio moderated the colloquium with a introduction by our president Julio Moreno.

The session ended with several questions from the public, among them local experts and also producers from the province. As always, it was a very interesting and educational event.

aove conferencia

The inaugural ASGT conference for el Año del AOVE de Sevilla took place this week at the rather splendid Casa de la Provincia. The guest speaker was Rosa Vañó, member of the Royal Gastronomy Academy and co-founder of Castillo de Canina in Jaén (where this deliciousness is produced), introduced by our president Julio Moreno Ventas. It’s going to be an exciting year… stay tuned!

This time I was reminded to stick around for the group pic afterwards (forgot during the Año del Arroz closing event last June…oops).

basilippo (3)

Sooooooo much fun revisiting Basilippo after far too long. This week I went with our Gastro Guías and Isaac Martín was an amazing host, as always. This small family-run organic evoo producer (celebrating their 20th anniversary) is just outside Carmona and well worth a visit if you are in Sevilla. It’s both an informative and delicious experience, and you get to spend time in their beautiful house and grounds.

As Isaac knew we were there to help educate our guides he went out of his way to make it an unforgettable experience, which culminated with a tasting of 5 olive oils and a special treat of chocolate chunk ice cream topped with their orange-infused oil… heaven.

arbequina amontillado (1)

Arbequina Amontillado by Castilla de Canena in Jaén. A young extra virgin arbequina olive oil refined in Bodegas Lustau amontillado sherry wine barrels more than half a century old. I first tried this at the Auténtica Food Festival in September and it blew me away, crazy gorgeous flavour, the best of two worlds. So excited to finally have some at home. Also hoping to visit the producers soon. Been missing Jaén a lot!
