compression

Well look at these sexy fuckers. Can I tell you? I’ve been looking for a compression knee sleeve since last year when my left knee gave out on me big time in May 2023 (now both knees are fucked). Could I find one? Well obviously no I couldn’t (or I wouldn’t be posting this now). All the ones I tried out cut off all circulation in a matter of seconds and then proceeded to just roll down my leg when I tried to walk.

Why? Because… legs too fat! Or so I was told. I didn’t fit into the acceptable size range, even the biggest XXX ones. And, while I acknowledge being fat I also know there are way fatter people out there. I mean, what do they do? Considering that many people with knee problems probably also have weight issues… wouldn’t there be a market for this?

It’s all been terribly discouraging because everyone tells me how wearing the sleeve makes ALL THE DIFFERENCE in pain relief. And since I have been denied any useful help from the various doctors I’ve seen lately  I’m kind of on my own. Been using an anti-inflammatory cream, been doing my chair yoga/pilates, and I keep on walking. But dammit it hurts.

And then these ones suddenly popped up on my Amazon page (while I was actually shopping for something else) and I thought… wait a minute, those look like they might actually work. The measurements were in keeping with mine, so I decided to give it a go. And so far… I can actually get it on. Will let you know how it goes.

fundacion cruzcampo

Today the Gastro Guías executive committee (don’t we sound posh!) met with Paco Ybarra and Claudia Guardiola from the Cruzcampo Foundation to to talk about possible workshops or courses that might be possible for our guides. Paco is the head chef of the foundation’s cooking school and Claudia is the foundation manager. It was a great meeting and we came away with so many ideas and, more importantly, we made another great contact that is keen on helping our association.

I mean, I already know Paco because he is also with the Academia Sevillana de Gastronomía y Turismo (we were both accepted as members at the same time last year) but I was surprised to discover Claudia is the sister of Jaime and Eduardo, both of whom I’ve known for ages. Really love the connections.

Step by step. I know we are going somewhere with this. I also know it’s been a steep learning curve for all four of us founding members and that in spite of some ups and downs we work very well together. Really proud to be a part of this whole adventure.

A ronqueo is the traditional butchering of a tuna, the name being a reference to the sound the knife makes as it scrapes along the spine (roncar = snore). I was invited to a special ronqueo this week to announce the beginning of Almadraba Tuna & Peruvian Flavours week, organised by my friend Eva @Flamencakitchen with La Pandilla de Perú (the Peru Gang! four restaurants run by Peruvian friends here).

The ronqueo started off with the fellow from Barbate hauling a 160 kilo tuna out of a van and commencing to hack it to bits. With extreme precision. Omg I was wincing in sympathy for his lower back but in less than half an hour he had this beautiful beast perfectly cut into the various parts and pieces with no waste whatsoever. Then it was time to eat.

The four chefs from Lima Street Food, Chicha Cocina Peruana, El Abrazsador and  La Salá got to work preparing the special tapas each of them were going to offer during the week while we drank pisco sours and cold beer enjoying the show. And then we got to taste the show! Seriously every tapa was fabulous. This was a brilliant concept and a great way to showcase both the annual almadraba tuna catch and the talents of these amazing Peruvian chefs. Thanks Eva!

friday fun

I was just mentioning how I am almost never go out at night anymore and, when I do, it’s usually for a tapas tour. But today ran away with me and by the evening I was feeling restless and suddenly HAD to go out. But where? Then I remembered I’d had an instagram message from a local craft beer company who asked if I would please try their azahar-infused pale ale and, as I knew they had it at Casa Moreno, I thought why the heck not. Also I LOVE this bar so much. You may remember Emilio who is locally famous for his charming hand-written bills (he also made a special one for my 30th Sevilla anniversary). So we tried the beer (actually quite nice) had a couple of tapitas and, when we were back in the street Peter suggested stopping in at Bodeguita Romero around the corner.

My first response was that we’d never get in but when we arrived two people sitting at the bar in my favourite spot (in front of the open doors) suddenly paid up and left. Done! Then this happened. I was on my way to the loo and passed three ladies (all about my age I think) at the far end of the bar who I realised had also just been at Casa Moreno. And they recognised me too! So we got to chatting and they were a bit surprised at my local knowledge of tapas bars so I had to fess up about being Queen of Tapas and even gave them my card so they could have a look at my website. It was fun. Then of course they made mention of my ACCENT (what? after 30 years you sound like this? etc etc) but lately I’ve decided to stop feeling embarrassed when people make fun of my accent and so I informed them that it is actually quite cute, in fact it’s ADORABLE (which made them laugh). Honestly from now on I am OWNING my fucking accent. So there.

Anyhow… on their way out they passed by and said “guess where we’re going now!”. I said Casa Morales because these are the three best trad bars in the ‘hood, but no. So they said “ok, here’s a hint, we’re going for tortillitas de camarones” and I said BARBIANA! Well. They almost fell over. So not only do I have an adorable accent but I also KNOW ALL THE BARS. Anyhow, it was so fun, going to both bars, having a snack and a drink at each, just getting out. Honestly I need to do this more often.

yin

I first met Yin in person a couple of years ago (after knowing her for years virtually) and this week she was back in town for a quick overnight stop. Happily she had time to meet up for lunch and we headed over to Palo Cortao, a new spot for Yin although she’s no stranger to Sevilla. Lovely afternoon and, as always, she somehow got me to pose for a selfie. Well, she also always allows me to “hide” so there’s that.
