almost

No, not me. Peter. And he actually was robbed but then the guy didn’t get away with it. What happened was that I was walking home today after having lunch out with Peter and our friend Paul (yes, he’s back!) and suddenly Peter wasn’t with us. Turned around and saw he was “chatting” with a touristy-looking young couple we’d passed in the street (wearing touristy hats, looking at a map). Except the man had Peter’s phone in his hand!! OMG.

When the guy saw Paul and I approaching he handed the phone back, insisting that it had fallen out of Peter’s bag. Uh… no. And they kept hovering and “explaining” while Peter was looking through his bag to see if anything else was missing. Finally I shouted at them to GO AWAY.

It was only after they left that it all sunk in. It happened in a flash and If Peter hadn’t felt a slight tug on his bag he wouldn’t have turned around and they would have made off with his phone. I mean, what if Peter had been on his own? What if they were armed? As we started walking again a neighbour told us they were a Romani couple, professionals, and he’d seen them around before.

This happened in Calle Pajaritos (narrow pedestrian street) around 4.30 pm. The street was quiet but Bar Estrella’s terraza on the corner was still full of tourists so I guess this couple was just hanging around waiting for victims. It’s actually my favourite “short cut” route to take home when coming from Barrio Santa Cruz, but now I won’t be doing that on my own any more. Dammit.

So we’re both taking this as a wake up call and making some changes, like leaving wallets, ID, credit cards at home during tours from now on and just carry cash and keys. And I think Peter has finally learned his lesson about not wearing his shoulder bag slung around to his back (I’ve been telling him for years he should wear it at the front). But even though it could have been worse it’s still left a bad feeling.

aove conferencia

The inaugural ASGT conference for el Año del AOVE de Sevilla took place this week at the rather splendid Casa de la Provincia. The guest speaker was Rosa Vañó, member of the Royal Gastronomy Academy and co-founder of Castillo de Canina in Jaén (where this deliciousness is produced), introduced by our president Julio Moreno Ventas. It’s going to be an exciting year… stay tuned!

This time I was reminded to stick around for the group pic afterwards (forgot during the Año del Arroz closing event last June…oops).

año del aove

Each year the Academia Sevillano de Gastronomía y Turismo chooses a provincially grown or produced product to feature in their annual programmes and events and this year they have proclaimed 2024 as the Year of Extra Virgin Olive Oil from Sevilla. I think during the present drought, with crop yields way down, it’s extra important to promote what we have growing on our doorstep so that, even if people have had do cut down on olive oil purchases, they remember to shop close to home whenever they can. We need to support homegrown.

D.O. Estepa is the only Denomination de Origin for olive oil in the province of Sevilla, so they will have a prominent role in our activities and events this year, but there are many other excellent small olive oil producers to highlight. Plus we will also be hosting other fun food events here in Sevilla so keep an eye on the ASGT Instagram account.

clausura año arroz

This week the Academia Sevilliana de Gastronomía y Turismo held its closing gala for the Año del Arroz de las Marismas del Guadalquivir. Who knew that Sevilla produces 40% of all the rice grown in Spain? Who even knew that Sevilla produces rice? Anyhow, the closing ceremony brought everything full circle with the recognition of the various collaborators over the past year. As I have only been a member of the Academy since late June I missed most of the activities but look forward to taking part in next year’s Año del Aceite de Oliva Virgen Extra de Estepa.

Afterwards we were treated to a delicious tapas lunch, including three rice dishes, provided by Restaurante Manolo Mayo. As a newbie I didn’t realise I was supposed to stick around for the group photo of the Academy members (duh) and headed straight to the dining area with everyone else. I did get a pic taken later on with the Gastro Guías but really felt like a dunce for missing my first Academia foto de familia. Oh well, next time.

gastro guias, sevilla

23 nov 23-001Baptiste, Antonio Castaño, me, María (MIA: Lola)

Today the Gastro Guías had a very pleasant and fruitful meeting with the new managing director of Sevilla City Office, Antonio Castaño. As I mentioned in September, with the new local government we’ve had to establish new contacts in the tourism office, as well as maintaining contact with our original ones, like Javier Torres who was instrumental in helping us get started. Plus we had our first members meeting this week and things are beginning to take shape. Stay tuned!
