better together

meeting july 17 (2)Julio, me, Lola, María, Ignacio & Baptiste

Yesterday my new Academy and my new Association got together and it was fabulous. I say “my” but of course in the sense of proudly belonging to both now. This is teamwork at its finest. All of us working towards common shared goals without personal interests getting in the way, other than that I think for most of us the goals also feel personal as we have lived them for so long.

Anyhow, for years I’ve felt so alone doing this, being a one-woman (non-Spanish) Spanish gastronomy ambassador however I could, but now… I got these guys! And it’s great. Just sitting around a table, talking about ideas, sharing opinions – and not always agreeing but that’s okay. That’s called debate and a time to learn something. The Academy and Association overlap in many ways, though we also have separate goals, but we are very complimentary and it really is better together.

Can’t wait to see what happens next. Watch this space!

sunday song – turning japanese

The other day I was having a cold beer in a new bar. I was checking it out in case I should review it and it turns out I won’t be, in no small part due to the annoying AF “slow smooth jazz pop” soundtrack not nearly far enough in the background. When did this awfulness start? It sucks the life out of every song it touches (we were unfortunate enough to experience Beat It getting this treatment – it was not nice). Anyhow I was trying to remember what this crap reminded me of and – of course! – it was the fabulous Rick Moranis (SCTV) turning pop hits into slimy lounge lizard croons, and this was one of the best. Enjoy.

block

So this popped up in my Instagram feed and I thought it was pretty timely as I had just received the notice that my appointment with the nutritionist/endocrinologist will be on August 4th (three weeks from today). Not bad as my GP just sent out the request last week. Anyhow, I have always felt “blocked” when it came to losing weight, pretty much all my life, but things got a lot more difficult after cancer/chemo, menopause and, well, getting older. As my friend Kate @sledpress wisely says, it’s not a simple binary about what goes in or doesn’t, which is something I have also noticed all my life.

The hope is that new doc won’t just put me “on a diet” but will address the various issues and help me find a more balanced and intelligent way of living with everything, without having to take more drugs. Though I think she has her work cut out for her because when I saw this pic I realised that I have ALL THE BLOCKS. In spades. Wish me luck!
