perez galdos

Calle Pérez Galdós could be – should be – such a pretty residential street. Instead it’s a war zone with late night (all night) bars, their patrons (mostly students, local and foreign, many underage) spilling out into the street, shouting and “singing” and screaming, at times also fighting.

I lived at the end of this street for five years and during that whole time I barely slept. At first I joined my neighbours in calling the police and at times I even stopped police in the street on my way home at night and pointed out all the illegal activity going on. Nothing. They did nothing even though they could see 15-year-olds falling down drunk, huge crowds shouting, never mind that it’s not permitted to DRINK IN THE STREET. They did nothing.

In the end I gave up and moved. Today I passed by and see that nothing has changed. Why is this street being “protected”, whose palms are being greased, so that this illegal activity goes on every night of the week? It is not normal that a barrio as lovely and vibrant as La Alfalfa should have been thrown under the bus like this. What’s going on?

broken

This made me sad and angry in equal amounts. What kind of fuckwit does this? Of course it’s all because years ago the local government issued licenses to several bars in this area (my barrio!), allowing them to stay open until 4 in the morning (and there’s another next to my house opens at 6 am – wtf?). Needless to say this attracts the kind of “select clientele” that commits these kinds of atrocities. Also, all of these bars are tiny, so people spill out into the street all night long, drinking, shouting, fighting, pissing, vomiting, vandalizing…

But this poor orange tree. It really does symbolise our broken barrio. So often since I moved here four years ago I’ve considered moving because of the noise and the “war zone” feeling the streets take on at night. But what about the residents who own their homes? It’s a terrible situation. A few months ago a neighbourhood association was formed, and we’ve been fighting city hall ever since. Meanwhile, I’m sure palms are being greased somewhere, and many of these bars selling cheap booze (often to minors) are probably also fronts for other illegal activities. Otherwise why don’t the police do anything?

One of the great things about living in my new barrio is that I come across great deals like this at the local supermarket – gambones (giant prawns) for just 11€ a kilo. How could I pass them up? But what to do with them? Well, after a bit of thought about a light low-carb meal I went for the easy option – a killer prawn, chorizo & spinach risotto. Whatever.

What would you have done with them?

I also got a couple of big fat tuna steaks for next to nothing that I’m now off to grill with a bit of lemon and garlic. Totally loving my new neighbourhood…
