Holiday, Malaga, trip

chamelion malaga
Don’t you just love this? I’d only previously seen photos of the Soho Málaga chameleon and actually walked right past it while on the way to my hotel (dragging suitcase). It’s in my street! Have also been checking out some of the other new graffiti in my new barrio. Very interesting how staying in a hotel just a few minutes walk from the centre feels so different from my other Málaga experiences. Love it.

Spent last night with dear friends Fred & Arpy and today with dear friend Victor. Fuck I’m lucky to know so many fabulous people.  Now off for a solitary tapa at local bar and an early night. Beach walk out to Pedregalejo tomorrow.

How’s your week going?

Holiday, Malaga, spain

malaga posterSince arriving in Málaga it’s been a crazy social whirlwind, meeting up with friends who live here and also with friends who have come to visit me while I’m here. Loads of fun, but also quite expensive what with eating out all the time, and even once at a Michelin star restaurant. Still, I didn’t care because – dammit – this is my first holiday in over 20 years and I just wanted to do whatever I wanted.

But all too fast the first week was over and when I moved into the most perfect holiday apartment ever I suddenly felt like I didn’t want to leave. Which was when I started thinking about extending my holiday by an extra week. I mean, there’s no tapas tour work for me in Sevilla at the moment and I can get on with my other work projects on the laptop from here if I have a good wifi connection. Unfortunately this most lovely apartment I’m at now is booked next week, so I had a look around. And it looks like I may have another good option.

sevilla posterBut the question is … do I really want/need to do this? One extra week will end up costing almost as much the first two weeks did since I spent the first week at Manolo’s and just chipped in for the electricity I used. Also, since my friends have mostly gone on their own holidays now perhaps it would be better to go home on Sunday after all the Fun & Friends. Because maybe another week here mostly on my own will feel like a bit of a let down after all the Fun. On the other hand, it might be the week on my own I actually need before getting back into stuff at home.

So… better to leave myself wanting more than spend another week and whacks of money and perhaps end up wondering why I’m still here? Or better to follow my gut about not feeling ready to go home yet? Because it does feel like there is some kind of “unfinished business” here – whether it’s to do with being in Málaga or just being on my own awhile longer I don’t know. I could also go home on Sunday and wait to see if another holiday opportunity presents itself over the next few weeks, but I don’t think another holiday is what I need…

Really not sure what to do.

victor and morcillaI am so pleased with and proud of my little travelling companion. Other than complaining a bit when being jostled around in her little carrier bag Morcilla is really taking to being on holiday. I guess because she is so young she doesn’t flip out when introduced to a new dwelling. In fact, it’s quite the opposite! She is suddenly all curious and wants to explore and check out every nook and cranny. She is also quite happy to meet new people. Here she is with my friend Victor (@welovemalaga) who helped me move over to my second holiday apartment this morning.

And so this apartment is a whole new Málaga experience for me. Other than one quick overnight stop in March, I’ve always stayed in the Malagueta, right on the beach. As of today I am in the centre of the old town, just a ten-minute walk to the Malagueta, but I think it will be a nice change having pretty much everything to hand. Don’t get me wrong, I love the beach location. But I’m looking forward to a week living in the centre of Málaga.

I’m also loving this apartment. It’s on a tiny pedestrian street and is all white minimalist, clean lines, with a bright lovely kitchen … and I even have a little terrace off my loft bedroom to enjoy coffee in the morning with my iPad. Take a look. Either on Fede’s webite (he’s the owner) or on his AirBnB page. I met Fede via Twitter – it turns out his brother owns one of my favourite tapas bars in Málaga, Taberna Uvedoble. And he was okay about having Morcilla here, which clinched the deal (hard to find holiday apts that allow pets). Anyhow, both Morcilla and I are all settled in and may not move out… love everything about this place. Though I’m a bit worried that Morcilla might slip and fall through the railing in the bedroom that overlooks the livingroom. But so far she seems to have figured out that she has to be careful. It’s just that sometimes, especially first thing in the morning, she goes totally mental, tearing around the place with reckless abandon. Well, fingers crossed on that one. It’ll be good practice for my stairs back home, which she still hadn’t quite discovered before we left on holiday.

I find myself already wishing I could spend a third week in Málaga. Well, you never know…

Holiday, Malaga, spain, summer

So I woke up yesterday morning with a little tortoiseshell girl curled up next to my head and it finally dawned on me that I AM ON HOLIDAY. The whole getting to and getting set up thing on Sunday took until mid-afternoon, and then there was the challenge of finding a decent place to eat on a Sunday (really should have travelled on Monday, but hey, live and learn).

holiday haircutAnyhow, after getting up and remembering I couldn’t make coffee (aaargh!) I decided to do a little internet stuff and then go out for a coffee when I went to the neighbourhood supermarket for supplies and, since I’d had two showers the day before, I thought I’d wait to wash my hair, etc until I got back. But then I had a closer look at The Hair and suddenly wished I’d had it cut before coming on holiday. And that was when I remembered that my friend Annie @CookinginSpain actually makes special trips to Málaga to have her hair cut here by Mónica, and I reckoned I should do the same.

So I went downstairs to a little bar and was just about to order a coffee when my friend Victor @WeLoveMalaga texted me and asked if I’d had breakfast yet. What great timing! And so I did my bit of shopping and then met Victor for a late brekky and a long chat, after which I made my way to the centre to visit Mónica. I was very pleased when I saw that where she works is a place I’ve adored for years because of the totally kitch Big Red Scissors hanging on the façade. About an hour later I walked out looking GORGEOUS with the hair I should have been born with – all straight and shiny – which was fun while it lasted. Which was maybe two hours. Ah well…

While my Hair succumbed to the elements (it’s really humid down here) I went out for a lovely snacky lunch at Taberna Uvedoble, one of my favourite places in Málaga. Then took a nice walk home through the new port area. All in all a fabulous spontaneous day. The next three days will be busier, as you shall see, but I am really loving having no real plans and just getting into the holiday groove.
