bars, home, legislation, sevilla

So this is the sight I came home to this evening…

This is the same bar in my building that recently reopened after having been closed for years… the same bar that caught on fire in the middle of the night and sent all of us outside clutching our most treasured possessions. And the same bar that promised they would be serving tapas and be a “family style” place. Bullshit. It’s a cheap drinks bar and they reopened (again) this week, after doing repairs from the fire.

Well, I’m not having it. Don’t get me wrong. I used to love the “hum of humanity” sound from all the tapas bars on my old street, and even found it comforting. Listening to people chatting and enjoying good food and conversation. But those bars all closed by midnight and the bar owners made sure they cleaned the outside areas. Trust me, the sound of young hipster types drinking to excess is not pleasant, and the mess they leave behind is appalling.

This bar owner also has the sleazy after-hours bar just down the street, which is so tiny that everyone ends up taking their drinks outside, mostly under my bedroom window – from 6 to 9am! – which is irksome beyond belief. It’s not been too unbearable up till now as I’ve had the double-glazed windows closed. But basically, I’ve had enough. I’ve spoken to the bar owner and clearly nothing is going to be done as all he seems to be able to say in his defense is that he has a licence.

I happen to know that he does not have a licence to make noise all night and disturb the neighbours so I am starting to organise the neighbourhood to sign a petition and take it to city hall. Enough!

cats, fire, home

About 4am the night before last I woke up to hear someone buzzing all the apartments in the building downstairs and I thought it was some drunken wanker. Then suddenly someone was banging on my front door and I reckoned it was worth getting up to see what was going on. As soon as I got near the door I could smell THE SMOKE and went to have a look over the balcony – fire! My building was on fire! By this time Peter was also up and in less than five minutes we had got dressed, grabbed my laptop,  managed to wrangle the cats into the extra large carrier and joined the crowd that had gathered outside, just as the firemen began bashing in the metal door of the bar downstairs with massive hatchets.

Smoke was billowing out of a vent at the front of the bar, fire trucks were rumbling, and the cats were howling so I thought – to hell with this – and headed for the new boutique hotel that had just opened up the street. The night receptionist looked a bit nervous when he saw us and said he didn’t have a free room, but I told him we just wanted a place to sit and wait things out. So he showed us in and then fetched us a nice chilled bottle of mineral water. Meanwhile, I noticed that one or both cats had peed inside the carrier and hoped the receptionist couldn’t smell it.

It was only after we got comfortably seated that I started to shake. I had my iPhone with me (of course!) and tweeting about it helped me calm down. This was the second time in my life that I’d woken up in the middle of the night to find my house on fire. At least this time it wasn’t my actual apartment – that time I was up and out in about 45 seconds! But I also didn’t have cats back then.

Anyhow, after a while I went to see how things were going and found the rest of my neighbours over at the sleezy “chupita” after hours bar around the corner. The owner of this place also owns the bar that caught fire. It had been closed for ages and had just reopened a couple of weeks ago. Already the neighbours were hating it because it stayed open until 3am and its patrons left the outside pavement littered with cigarette butts. Well, guess we won’t have to worry about that anymore! But the weird thing was that all day Tuesday the bar had been closed, so how could the fire have started? If they had opened would they have seen that someone had left the cooker on, or whatever?

Finally we got the okay to go back to our homes. The police had been taking down everybody’s names and were relieved to see me as they thought I might still be inside (there had been a LOT of smoke). And so we were all escorted to our apartments so that the firemen to check and make sure there were no secondary fires anywhere. It was amazing how smoky the place was – it actually hurt to breathe – so we opened all the windows and doors and then I gave the cats a sponge bath and towelling down. Of course they didn’t enjoy it, but they also knew I was helping them smell better. In fact, they were so good once we got to the hotel. Honestly, they make way more of a fuss going to the vet’s. And once I got them tidied up the both had a massive grooming session, just letting me know that they do it much better!

I was shocked to find out that my neighbour had left his two cats in the apartment. How someone could leave their pets in a burning building is beyond me. I know that Pérez has ways in and out, but the other one is a house cat. Sheesh.

So that was the adventure. Now it will take ages to clean up! The whole place has a fine film of smoke on it which for the most part isn’t too visible. But when you start to wipe down a surface it suddenly goes all smudgy. Ah well, it could’ve been much worse and I’m so very glad that it wasn’t.

curtains, home, IKEA

I know it doesn’t seem like much, but after a rather harrowing experience at IKEA on Friday evening I ended up with a few much-needed things that I hadn’t picked up during the last harrowing visit … and then I saw these curtains.

Dead cheap at 10 euros but gauzy and pretty and, although they aren’t any great shakes and hang a bit wonkily, they are so perfect for that one livingroom set of balcony windows that gets the morning sun. It’s also the only window that neighbours can see into and, well, they can’t anymore!

Of course now that I’ve got them up I wish I’d bought another pair to put up elsewhere. But I’ll be damned if I’m going to spend busfare and hours of my life again just to buy a 10 euro item.

Or will I…?

cats, home, terraza

Yesterday I made a fabulous (if I say so myself) lunch for my friend Del (aka @WeeRascal) who was in town from Scotland for a few days of much-needed sunshine. It was a beautiful day so we sat out on the terraza and, after Del left, it felt too nice up there to come back inside. So Nog and I decided it would be a good time to let the boys come out and see what they made of the “great outdoors”. We kept a sharp eye on them, especially on Loki, and also kept an eye out for Pérez, who thankfully didn’t show up. Anyhow, they were out there for about half an hour and really loved it.

Other than the threat of Pérez turning up and ripping the boys to shreds, I’d feel quite fine about letting Azar go out on his own. I know he wouldn’t try leaping over the wall, though I’m not sure about Loki. But at least they can get out from time to time for a bit of fresh air.

flatmates, friends, home

My new flatmate Jessica moved in today, so now I have two. Jessica will be here until September, though kind of part-time as she is away a lot, either working in Doñana or visiting her real home in Paris.

Meanwhile, Nog hasn’t had enough work to live on for some time now and as a result may have to return to the UK, but for now he’s staying on for another month or so to see if he can get things to pick up. If he ends up leaving I’ll wait until the summer is over and then look for someone to rent Jessica’s room.

The apartment is actually big enough for all of us to share comfortably, though Nog doesn’t have a bedroom (sofa bed in the living room for him) and the bathroom is way too small. But the rest of the space, and having two floors and the terrace, allows for either cosy evenings in together, or each of us hanging out on our own.

Sure has been a year of changes. And so for the next four months until the next PET scan I want to focus on my work, my friends, my cats and my home.

I’m happy.  🙂
