tuesday in london
One of the highlights of my London trip was Lizzie coming into town from Bristol to spend Tuesday with me. Last time I saw her was almost five years ago, but it was like no time had passed at all. We met at my friend José Pizarro’s newest tapas restaurant in Broadgate Circle (he has two others near Borough Market). Now I wouldn’t ordinarily go out for tapas in London, but I’ve been dying to see José’s places for years, and finally I got the chance.

Anyhow, Lizzie and I had a fabulous long lunch with mucho vino and then went down to Oxford Street to do a little Drunk Shopping. Later on we made our way over to Spitalfields Market for a late snack at Nuno Mendez’s new Portuguese restaurant, Taberna do Mercado. Far too soon our day together was over and it was so hard to say goodbye. And I still can’t believe that the only photo I took of Lizzie was one of her falling sideways into a plate of pão de ló. Ah well. We made a lot of great memories.

hello london!

the shard

My first glimpse of The Shard as I was driven to my hotel in London.
Fortnum & Mason are now doing “afternoon tea in the sky” there.

kipling suitcaseLucky for me I’m a neurotic mess when I travel and start packing way ahead of time. Yesterday I took out my old medium-sized suitcase to air it out (a carry-on just wasn’t going to do it for a week in London) and it made a strange rattling noise. So I opened it up to find the entire plastic backing had shattered and lay in a pile of shardy bits between the lining and the outer casing. WTF? Okay, I hadn’t used it in a long while, and it only cost about 30€ back in the day, but I still hadn’t expected to self-destruct like that, all on its own in the closet. So this morning some emergency suitcase shopping was required.

I went back to the shop where I’d bought my cheapie case and saw a similar model was now 50€. So then I decided to pop over to El Corte Inglés to see what they had. And guess what? They had soft suitcases by Kipling (my new handbag obession)! Really cute ones too. Not cheap, but light as a feather and with lots of “expandible” space with clever compartments. Basically a very well-designed travel bag (well, except for those superfluous “duffle bag” handles) and so I went for it. And suddenly I feel quite grown up. I’ve never had a suitcase before that didn’t come from a cheap import place. First noticeable difference is that my new Kipling doesn’t have a weird smell – those other ones must use very dodgy materials, glues, etc. Also, it’s more versatile as it is only grows as big as you fill it. Okay, it won’t pass for carry-on, but I would take it on trips (Málaga, etc) that I usually use the carry-on and be more comfortable with the extra space “waiting to happen”. But on the other hand, nobody was ever going to steal my crappy no-brand cheapos… will a cute Kipling be more of a temptation? Yep, first world problems.

What kind of luggage do you use?

londoncalling
Although it’s still a few days away, I am getting very excited about my upcoming trip to London. It’s been almost five years since my last visit and lots has happened since. Probably the main difference is that back then I was still (slowly) getting back on my feet after cancer & chemo, so things were very much up in the air and money was pretty tight. I’d started my food tours the year before but still needed extra work to make ends meet. So when I was offered a writing job for a new travel website I paid my own way to attend a staff meeting in London. Turned out to be a good job while it (the website) lasted, so it was worth the investment. And of course it was great to meet up with friends.

Fast forward five years. Sevilla Tapas is going strong – in fact, an abundance of work led to the creation of We Love Tapas last year – so I won’t be so skint this time. Also a huge bonus – this is an all-expense paid trip to attend the FoodieHub Global Awards as their Sevilla Food Expert. So the situation couldn’t be more different. And all changes for the better.

I’ll be busy all weekend with Award show activities, and then will have an extra three days in the city. I was going to look for an AirBnB option but then my friends Jo & Mark said I could “housesit” their place as they were going to be away. How perfect is that? Well, except for not getting to see Jo & Mark. But I know they’ll be back in Andalucía soon. And now I am turning into a nervous wreck. Only four more sleeps! Time to start packing…
