My lovely friends Fabrizia & Franco opened a new pizzeria in the Alameda yesterday and it’s really something special. Offering different pizza styles from different regions of Italy, along with wine pairing suggestions. Stopped by for the opening and had a couple of snacks… must go back with at least 2-3 other friends to help try all the options.Wishing them all the luck in the world, they really know how to do this right.

Sometimes only a pizza will do, right? And my favourite place for a pizza is in front of the original Casa Azahar in calle Mateos Gago, at L’Oca Giuliva. This was a diavola “devil” pizza, hinting that it would be hot and spicy, but of course I would have sprinkled more chillis on it. Wonderful pizza though, with (for my taste) the best crust in town. I’d be in big trouble if they ever started a home delivery service.

Can you believe that this is the first time EVER that I’ve had pizza delivered to my house? When I first came to Sevilla and lived near the cathedral there used to be a nice pizza place that I would occasionally call, wait ten minutes, and then go pick up. And when I first moved to my present apartment (February 2011) I discovered another good place just a few minutes walk away. Same deal, call in and pick up. But then awhile ago I saw that the La Mia Tana restaurant on my street was offering free delivery, so what the heck. It seemed like the perfect solution for a lazy Saturday night at home.

To be honest, I probably only have pizza 2-3 times a year, but the novelty of ordering food and having it brought to my door was, well, novel. Pretty tasty too.

accidents, pizza, toaster

So I said to Jessica last night, “instead of turning the oven on in The Heat, why not heat up your pizza on the cute little flat toaster?” (the one I’d bought last May). And then I suggested she put some aluminum foil down so that cheese wouldn’t drip down…and five minutes later the whole damn toaster had melted!! Who’da thunkit?

After that bit of excitement I went back to bed and Jessica ended up microwaving her pizza. Not ideal, but neither was turning on the oven in 40º weather.

But tonight we are having a Very Good Pizza from my next door neighbour’s Italian restaurant Al Solito Posto. Doesn’t it look great? I suspect that not having eating anything for the last 48 hours other than some melon and toast yesterday, and a couple slices of bread today, that this might be why I am feeling suddenly weak and queasy again, after having not felt too bad most of the day. I remembered that pizza was one of the few things that appealed – and that I could keep down – when I was on chemo.

We’re also going to watch the Seville segment of Rick Stein’s Spain as Jessica hasn’t seen it and I want to see it again to see if my opinion has changed. Gotto go…

moving, pizza

I am about to eat my fifth pizza in the the past two weeks…

I think I usually eat pizza about once ever six months or so, but this moving biz just leaves things like time and kitchen availability so unpredictable that sending Nog out for a pizza for us to share seems like the quickest and most economical way for us to have something resembling a hot meal. This also includes the “pre-moving” period after the kitchen had been packed up and we were tired of sandwiches (though I guess a pizza really is just a fancier version of cheese on toast).

I thought our pizza days were behind us as we now have a fairly well-stocked fridge and most of the kitchen cupboards have been cleaned and organised. In fact, I made a lovely carbonara for lunch yesterday. But then the handyman came back today to do a few jobs, which meant me hobbling off to the hardware store to get this & that (Nog was out teaching), which took up most of the morning, and then there were some minor kitchen repairs that left that room unusable for another couple of hours… so more pizza.

But I have to say that the place is really coming together. It’s great that the landlords have sent the handyman over to make sure everything is in good working order. Apparently he has to come back tomorrow to take care of a few other things, and then we’ll be pretty much set up and it will just be a matter of UNPACKING.
