This was actually published in November (in print) and later was also published online, but Decanter has changed its policy for online viewing and now everything is being paywalled, so I didn’t actually get a chance to see the finished article until now. My editor Ines sent me a surprise package this week and I finally got to hold it in my hot little hands.
I researched most of The Alternative Costa del Sol last May when I went to Málaga & Marbella, and my friend Jeffrey helped me out with a lot of tips, as he lives in the area. I hope that Decanter reconsiders this policy, at least for “lighter” articles like mine. Meanwhile, you can see my previous ones below.

And a thinly veiled disguise at that. Spotted this posted on the storefront window of Lush Cosmetics in Calle Tetuan whilst out for a hobble…
Pintarse la cara de negro no es tradición. Es racismo maquillado.
La ONU reconoce el blackface como una práctica racista que perpetúa estereotipos coloniales.
#StopBlackfaceInSpainPainting your face black is not a tradition. It’s racism in disguise.
The UN recognises blackface as a racist practice that perpetuates colonial stereotypes.
Well done Lush! And WTF is wrong with you Spain, that you still think this sort of “casual racism” is just a “harmless custom” meant to bring joy to children? Yes, the practice has come under debate and received much criticism over the past few years, but I mean what is there to debate? Spain, I love you but just stop fucking doing this already. I could say a LOT more about racism in Spain but I’m just too overwhelmed by THE WORLD right now. Some other time perhaps. I was just glad to see this today, though sorry it still needs to be said.

Well I didn’t think even the Power of the Duvet could manage this! Morcilla has not only stopped being all hissy-spitty at Luna (which she had been doing ever since the operation) but she has also gone back to accepting Luna lying next to her on the bed. Phew! And now just three more sleeps until the stitches – and the Dread Cone – are removed. It’s been a long, stressful time for everyone. 🐾🤍
