cosy loki

So remember last week when I posted about finding a wee lump on Morcilla’s head? Well I decided that as I was going to be put through the whole CAT SCREAMING TAXI RIDE to the vet’s I may as well take Loki in too. Ever since his last check up in May I’ve been concerned because it felt like that vet wasn’t being thorough. In fact, a week after the blood test she called me with the results and said everything looked fine but that they had held back some blood in case I wanted further tests done, specifically for the pancreas, even though Loki was showing no symptoms of pancreatitis. And I thought… whaaat? It felt a bit scammy and even the vet admitted Loki wasn’t presenting for pancreatitis, so I told her I’d wait a bit on that. But I mean, they kept some blood? Is blood even viable for testing after a week? Whatever. I’d actually been losing confidence in this vet for some time so it wasn’t until Morcilla’s lump that I realised I didn’t want to go back there…

on the mend?

When I walked in with Loki yesterday the vet on duty was very good with him, letting Loki take his time coming out of the carrier, talking nice to him… I liked her immediately. Then after some poking and prodding she pronounced that he had no serious abdominal pain and that he looked perfectly healthy otherwise, not dehydrated, not drooling, no other obvious symptoms.  She thought he had an acute gastroenteritis, gave him a shot of something to soothe his stomach and also an antibiotic, and said that I could treat him at home with special food and a stomach protector (to be squirted into his mouth twice a day), and said if he hasn’t improved by Friday I’m to take him back for blood tests.

At first I suggested she just do the tests NOW and get it over with, to avoid another hellish trip there and back, and so we could find out for sure. I mean, Loki is 8 now. Wouldn’t a general blood test be a prudent thing to do anyhow? At this point Eva could see that I was more than a bit stressed and she even started snipping off the fur on his front leg… and then stopped again and asked “are you sure?”. So I finally agreed to do it her way, step by step.

And then imagine my surprise when she looked up Loki’s file and saw that his last visit there in 2013 WAS FOR THE EXACT SAME THING. Seriously. She showed me Begonia’s notes and they were word for word the same diagnosis and treatment. Which obviously worked last time, so that helped me relax a bit.

But after all that I’m still not sure if Loki is on the mend. Last night he immediately threw up his “easy to digest” paté right after eating it, though I thought perhaps the meds still needed a bit more time to kick in. Then things weren’t looking any better this morning. I gave him the oral med (liquid stomach protector) and then, as the vet prescribed, just 3 teaspoons of the paté, which he gave up on eating until I held out bits of it on the end of my finger for him to lick off. He was clearly hungry and finished it all off, but then 5 minutes later up it all came again – and probably the meds too, dammit. So I was beginning to despair, dreading another trip to the vet and wishing I’d insisted on her doing the blood test yesterday. But then I tried another tactic, giving Loki just a small bite of paté off the end of my finger, maybe a third of a teaspoon. He ate that about an hour ago and – so far – has kept it down. So I will continue doing that for the rest of the day, just a small bite of food every hour or so, and see how it goes.

Meanwhile, Loki is clearly looking for comfort. I built him a little “cushion fort” on the sofa yesterday, with the small duvet for him to lie on. Otherwise he is sitting on my lap when I am in my chair, getting plenty of cuddles. I really hope I have more positive news tomorrow.

cats, health, vets

loki in a boxHere’s poor Loki as we were getting ready to go to the vet’s. We’re back home now and I’m happy to report that nothing seems dangerously wrong with him. But it all started on Saturday afternoon. I’d come home from shopping and – very strangely! – Loki didn’t race to snarfle down his food when I put out the kitteh lunch. Shortly after that he started vomiting, which he kept up until Sunday evening, poor thing. And even after having not eaten for about 36 hours he still wouldn’t eat, which was when I started to worry.

So yesterday I bought some special food for treating cats that have had gastritis, a nice soft paté… and he wouldn’t touch that either. He did keep down what I managed to force feed him, but as he was still lethargic this morning I decided he should get checked out. Basically Begonia the vet thought the same as me, that Loki had had some sort of stomach upset and was feeling low, but as long as I kept force feeding him and he was keeping it down she said he should be okay in a day or so. She gave him a cocktail injection of something to soothe the stomach and an antibiotic and we were on our way home again. And so of course – after going through the whole VET thing and spending about 40 euros – once back home and after a feeding session Loki starting eating on his own again. Phew!

What’s so weird is that on Thursday afternoon (the day before the tumour burst!) I’d sent these two photos by email to Sledpress to show her just how damn BIG the thing had become, and express my worry about it. Then yesterday – blam! You can read the gory details here.

Since then Azar has been looking much perkier. The best thing being that he has regained the use of his one good front leg and can comfortably sit up again and even walk around much easier. I’m not exaggerating when I say the lump was the size of a baseball – poor Azar couldn’t even straighten out his leg anymore and was in a permanent crouched position. The reason he was sometimes peeing on the sofa was that, once there, he didn’t want to have to jump down to get to the box because it hurt too much. I had started carrying him to the box at regular intervals but couldn’t always be there, but when he was left overnight this week he had no problem as he stayed on a blanket under my bed with the litter box nearby.

The wound still looks messy, but Azar is a good healer. And he so intensely loves being alive. I am starting to wonder if his tumour is even malignant, because something that big should have killed him by now if it was. Could it just be a nasty cyst? Anyhow, he has been snatched back from the brink and is now happily snoozing away. I’ll be taking him to the vet’s this morning because I think the wound needs to be properly dressed and he may need to take antibiotics to stave off infection.

One thing is for sure. If this had happened while I was away in Córdoba, or even just away for the afternoon, he probably would have died. He was in such a panic and hyperventilating that without me there to clean him up and calm him down I don’t think he’d still be here. So lucky! But hey, that’s his name. Azar.

cats, vets

Today I did something I have never attempted before… I took two cats to the vet’s at once! Well, with the help of Peter. And I have to say that I couldn’t have done it without him. Not only was it a two-person job getting both cats into the carrier but I never could have lifted the thing. Turned out there was 10 kilos of cats in there (Loki 7.1kg and Luna 2.9kg). Luckily there’s a taxi stand just a couple of minutes from the house.

It was also less traumatic than I’d anticipated. Luna was her usual quiet self – I have never known a cat that didn’t scream blue murder when going to the vet’s. And although Loki was clearly upset and made a fair bit of noise, he seemed to be comforted by Luna’s serene presence. Though I did worry he might crush her to death as he was all over the place in the carrier.

Anyhow, got there and back again with quite a few things done. Both cats got their vaccination booster shots and a check up. They were also both treated for all kinds of parasites (Luna’s worms came back a couple of times and I was concerned they weren’t totally killed off) with a pill and then a topical solution that got dabbed on the backs of their heads. I now have to do the same here for Azar. Oh, and Yolanda also clipped everyone’s claws, which isn’t something they easily let me do at home. So, 112 euros later we were back home and everyone was relieved to have the ordeal over and done with.

That’s it now until mid-January when I’ll be taking Luna in to get sterilized… €€€!!!
