albarino day 24

It’s International Albariño Day and we are here for it!  Celebrated annually on August 1, Albariño Day was born out of a contest between two men — Bernardo Quintanilla and Ernesto Zárate — to determine the best wine of 1952, with Zárate declared the winner. In the bottom right hand corner is winemaker Eulogio Zárate and his wife Rebeca Montero, who now run the Zárate winery in Meaño, Pontevedra. I was lucky enough to visit Eulogio and Rebeca at their home back in 2019, the photo here was taken in April at a wine event in Jerez. With a bit of luck I may make it back to Galicia later this year. Fingers crossed!

decanter july 2024

It’s out! The latest issue of Decanter, and very happily my friend Paul (yes, he’s back) brought me a copy so I could hold it in my hot little hands and see my article on Exploring Sherry Country in print. I mean, it’s always great to also write on line articles for Decanter, but I still get a thrill from seeing my name in an ACTUAL MAGAZINE. As usual it was an absolute torture to write and, as always, as soon as I finished I wanted to do another one. This one should be up on the website soon, stay tuned…

vinos españa pasion

The 10th anniversary of Vinos de España Una Pasión took place back where it all began, in Jerez de la Frontera. Each year a different city is chosen for this event and I went to the only one (so far) held in Sevilla back in 2016. But how could I miss this special anniversary, especially being held in Jerez? And especially after I saw the lineup of bodegas! Holy moly. Top wineries from all over Spain in one place for one day only.

And this is the man who makes it all happen… Juan Manuel Hidalgo, who I had the good fortune of meeting many years ago at Eslava. We were just hanging out at the bar and then Eslava owner Sixto introduced us because he knew I loved sherry wines. Anyhow, we’ve known each other since then and it’s always a pleasure to meet up.

The chosen venue chosen is always somewhere spectacular and this time it was in the beautiful Palacio de la Atalaya. What a wonderful time. I got to see bodega owners I’d visited years ago in Galicia, catch up with old friends and meet some new ones.

There were two sessions: morning (11am – 3 pm) and afternoon (5 – 8pm). I prefer going to the early ones as they tend to be less crowded. In this case we didn’t even arrive until 12.30, but a 2.5 hour wine tasting is plenty of time. Above are a few pics I took but I was having such a great time talking to everyone that a couple of special friends are missing. Oh well. They know who they are. Cheers!

decanter sevilla 23

I remember being so excited when my first ever article for Decanter Magazine was published (in print) for their March 2019 Spain issue. Later on it was also published online. But of course it’s been a while and there have been a lot of changes happening here and everywhere, so finally I was asked to update my piece and, well, here it is!

The physical copy of this month’s Decanter Magazine arrived today, with many thanks to Michael (and no thanks to Brexit!). He tried to post it from London and was told it would have to go Priority Post as they were no longer offering regular post to Europe because of the various strikes, etc and that would have cost him 59£ . Like what? So I told him I’d try and find another option. But then it was Michael to the rescue when he found out the son of his friend Pankaj would be in Barcelona soon and could post it from there. Phew! I always say it never feels real until I’m holding that baby in my hot little hands.

And check this out. For the first time I’ve been included on the
Decanter Experts page and like… OMG.
Seriously OMG.
