FreeRice has two goals:
1. Provide English vocabulary to everyone for free.
2. Help end world hunger by providing rice to hungry people for free. This is made possible by the sponsors who advertise on this site.
Whether you are CEO of a large corporation or a street child in a poor country, improving your vocabulary can improve your life. It is a great investment in yourself.
Perhaps even greater is the investment your donated rice makes in hungry human beings, enabling them to function and be productive. Somewhere in the world, a person is eating rice that you helped provide. Thank you.
Over on this post it was suggested by the lovely alejna that I check out FreeRice, but I thought it was just another vocabulary quiz site that would make me feel stupid, so I was putting it off until I felt more like a bit of a challenge. Then yesterday I was reminded about this by bob’s yer uncle, a new visitor to casa az, and afterwards Nog and I spent quite an enjoyable half hour or so playing it together … and got up to about 2000 grains of rice.
So why not try it out?
It’s refreshingly addictive! And you also get to help feed the world.

What is the highest vocabulary score you got? Mine was 52 I think, after about a week of playing it solidly.

Play a game to pay for rice pieces to feed people? A bit odd to me. I’d rather mail off a ton of rice before I make myself feel stupid 🙂

Hi Soloman, and welcome. 🙂
I’ve just played it the once, last night, so that would have been my highest score … can’t remember what it was now.
Nah, it doesn’t make you feel stupid, uw. Though I found that knowing Spanish helped with some of the more obscure latin-based words. And playing with Nog was fun because often one of us would know a word that the other didn’t.

Just tried it again on my own and got 47 (had to stop because I have to leave for yoga class in a few minutes), which I’ve also put up on the post and will change it as it (hopefully) goes up.
Soloman, do you start over each time or have you set the options to remember where you left off?

I played this over at bagwine’s a couple of weeks ago. it’s very addictive as the words are so interesting.
can’t remember what I got last time but today I scored 45

46 so far – helps that I can be a reasonable guesser!

I set the options to ‘remember’ but it doesn’t just tell you what your highest score is and how many grains of rice you’ve racked up so far, as I thought. You also start playing from where you left off, which seems a bit like cheating.
I think I prefer starting over each time to see if I can beat my previous highest score.

Got it up to 48

Very cool site. I peaked at 41. The FAQ says that 50 is the maximum, but that very few people get over 48.
Several of the words “definitions” didn’t match the usage I was familiar with (the were probably using a more common definition). But I was able to guess 🙂

I’ve been quite lucky at guessing too Arnie, and as I said earlier, it’s amazing how much knowing Spanish has helped.
I know what you mean about the “definitions”. Yesterday the definition for escarole was endive but to me these are two quite different veggies. Got it right though as it was the only veggie option.

I noticed as well that, for example, rorqual was defined as meaning whale, whereas I am pretty damn certain that a rorqual is a type of whale. There have been others like that as well.

Well of course the good thing was that it had me googling endive and escarole and I found out that what I call endive is actually Belgian endive, and that escarole is indeed a type of endive.

And up to 49 today! Yay!
For the record, I’m starting off fresh everyday and not keeping my old score ‘remembered’. Got up to 49 in about ten minutes.

Wahoo! Nice work az! 🙂 I’ve given up on making 50…

Very nice – I can get to 48 reasonably consistently, but not come close to 49

Well, after I hit 49 I went down to about 42 rather quickly… after a certain point the words get much more difficult. Quite enjoying this as a daily exercise though, and nice to know that I’ve donated thousands of grains of rice by now. 🙂

I think the highest score you can get is 60. Within the first 4 words I get to level 50, but I have not yet beat my personal best of 52.

Hi amy, and welcome. It’s been awhile since I’ve played – must try to beat my personal best.
Wow, you get to 50 in four words? Impressive.
