24 Friday Nov 2023

I usually try to hold out until it’s 19º in the house (29º in summer) before turning on the heat/AC. And today was the day. Which, considering the date, is actually well-past time. Finally had to start wearing shoes this past week so winter has officially come to town, though it’s still a bit warmer than usual in the afternoons. How’s the weather where you are?

Today the Gastro Guías had a very pleasant and fruitful meeting with the new managing director of Sevilla City Office, Antonio Castaño. As I mentioned in September, with the new local government we’ve had to establish new contacts in the tourism office, as well as maintaining contact with our original ones, like Javier Torres who was instrumental in helping us get started. Plus we had our first members meeting this week and things are beginning to take shape. Stay tuned!

Arbequina Amontillado by Castilla de Canena in Jaén. A young extra virgin arbequina olive oil refined in Bodegas Lustau amontillado sherry wine barrels more than half a century old. I first tried this at the Auténtica Food Festival in September and it blew me away, crazy gorgeous flavour, the best of two worlds. So excited to finally have some at home. Also hoping to visit the producers soon. Been missing Jaén a lot!

Local artist Alfredo Rodríguez (also my friend and neighbour – he lives just down the street) has put out his second Sevilla almanac and so I picked up one for myself, one for Debs and another for Paul. Last year’s featured one of his famous bar facades per month, this year we get one barrio per month with 4-5 gorgeous images on each page. Mine is already up and so I’m quite looking forward to next year!
