No death in the afternoon: state TV axes bullfights

I have very mixed feelings about bullfighting. I’ve never gone to one, though part of me is tempted by the traditional ‘ambientation’. But I don’t think I’d do well watching the ritual slaying because the only time I ever saw one on television I burst into tears.

On the other hand, I would feel hypocritical denouncing bullfighting since I eat meat. And although I try to buy free range as much as possible I know that animals raised on factory farms suffer much worse and much longer than the bull in the ring. The basic life story of a fighting toro is that it is lives like a king for 3-5 years with plenty of fresh air, good food and exercise, then puts up a fifteen-minute fight for its life and is killed relatively quickly. And as far as I know, afterwards the meat is usually sold to be eaten.

I think not showing the fights on TV in the afternoons is probably a good thing, though as the article says, it’s only being banned by the state television – the regional public broadcasters will continue showing them. But although I personally find bullfighting distasteful I can’t bring myself to say it should be banned altogether.

What do you think?

socks & sandals … why???

ohdear.jpg   Is there ever a good excuse? I rather don’t think so.

In keeping with this Freudian foot fetish thang I apparently have . . . recently on an h2g2 thread someone asked why socks and sandals were considered unstylish. And I decided the only possible rebuttal was to provide photo evidence. And here it is . . .

Tourist sites ‘prove turn-offs’

MOST DISAPPOINTING SIGHTS

UK:

  • Stonehenge
  • Angel of the North, Gateshead
  • Blackpool Tower
  • Land’s End, Cornwall
  • Diana Princess of Wales Memorial Fountain, London

OVERSEAS:

  • The Eiffel Tower, Paris
  • The Louvre, Paris
  • Times Square, New York
  • Las Ramblas, Barcelona
  • Statue of Liberty, New York

Well good. Maybe more of them should stay home then . . .

Living in the centre of Sevilla, tourists are regarded as a kind of necessary evil. Sure they bring in lots of cash but tourism is also responsible for my neighbourhood changing from a barrio with family run corner shops and bars, greengrocers, bakeries, bookshops and newsagents, to chain-run ‘typical tapa’ bars and practically every storefront selling exactly the same crappy souvenirs. And every day I have to plough my way through herds of tourists blocking the sidewalks and even the entrance to my front door.

Anyhow, what did you think of the article? Have you ever been disappointed by a world famous tourist attraction? What are the most impressive sights you’ve ever seen while travelling?

Yikes – it’s another blog!!!

As many of you know, about a year or so ago I started a page here called sevilla tapas which included short write-ups on some of my favourite restaurants and tapa bars that also linked to photos on my Fotki page.

This morning I was adding to and reorganising the Fotki tapitas album and I got to thinking that it might be more interesting to have everything together. So what I’ve done is start a new blog that is set up so that each restaurant and tapa bar has its own category. You can click on the drop-down widget on the right and find all posts relating to a particular place there. Each place will have at least two posts to start with – one with general information and the other will be for photos.

I’ve only got one category finished so far (for Modesto Restaurante) if you want to check it out and let me know what you think. I’m planning to write a longer ‘review’ for each place – the one there for Modesto at the moment was just taken from the page here to use as a temporary example.

The link below will take you to the welcome page. On the sidebar widget look under Restaurant and Tapa Bar Categories for Modesto and check out the posts. Each post has a link to the other.
