While out for a walk this afternoon I spotted a poster announcing a Leonard Cohen concert in Granada in September! And I thought – hey, I should be working by then so maybe I’ll be able to go. Just checked out a couple of ticket sales websites … 150-200€ ! Sorry Leonard. I shall just add this to the list of summer events I won’t be attending.
My dear friend Lizzie insists that Bruce Springsteen is good for both the soul and the red blood cells (she’s just seen him at Glastonbury) and for some bizarre reason da Boss will be performing in Sevilla at the end of July … but again, outrageous prices.
Meanwhile, the concert I had really wanted to see was the amazing flamenco artist Sara Baras at the Italica International Dance Festival, being held in its original setting – Italica’s roman amphitheatre – for the first time since 1993. I was sure it was going to cost a small fortune and put it out of my mind after seeing this wonderful poster the other day, but when I was checking out Leonard Cohen tickets just now I decided to have a look at the Italica prices … and I almost wept. They were only 15 euros and, of course, are now sold out. Well, unless you’re headless (at least, I assume that’s what discapacitado means…)

When I was 16, and had already been living on my own for a year, I ended up transferring to an “alternative” highschool in Winnipeg which had an open curriculum and very liberal-minded teachers. At the time I was working evenings and weekends at Canadian Tire to pay the rent (no help from family) and living with my boyfriend Brian. One of the perks at this highschool was that we could sign up for theatre and ballet productions we wanted to see as the school was given comps to distribute. I always signed up for ballet tickets as I still had dreams back then of becoming a dancer (comtemporary, not ballet). Thus I got to see Baryshnikov shortly after he defected in Canada and did a short tour with the Royal Winnipeg Ballet. I also got to see the premiere of a ballet by Norbert Vesak called What To Do Till The Messiah Comes, which included a pas de deux called Belong. I remember watching it and thinking I’d never seen anything so beautiful in my life and was surprised at the end of it to find my face wet with tears.
Something reminded me of this ballet yesterday and so I looked it up and here it is performed by Evelyn Hart and David Peregrine of the RWB. They were not the couple I’d seen back in 1973, but they went on to make Belong their signature piece and in 1980 won the gold medal at the International Ballet Competition in Varna, Bulgaria. You can see their performance above. I still think it is one of the most beautiful things I have ever seen in my life.
(best if you full-screen it and turn up the volume)

It’s that time of year again!
This weekend is the official start of the Christmas season here in Spain. Some of you may recall last year when the residents of casa az elfed themselves. and Nog also made a fine dancing Scrooge. This year you will be entertained by myself and my best friends in Sevilla … (L to R) Pablo, Carmen, Nog and Pipocas.
Above is the Classic Christmas version. This year three new versions are also being offered, which you can see below.
Be sure to have your speakers on!
