The Velá de Santa Ana officially starts tomorrow but tonight the Virgen del Carmen sets out on a short excursion down the river before making her way – back on land – to her home. And in almost 30 years in Sevilla (anniversary coming up in September) I have never witnessed this. Well folks, tonight is the night. Stay tuned…

Pics of Plaza San Francisco taken yesterday evening. For the first time ever the Corpus Christi procession has been cancelled due to rain. Normally I would have been up and out at the crack of dawn today to walk the route (pre-procession) before the crowds hit and then sleepily look for somewhere to have breakfast.
I’ve always loved doing this. The only times I’ve missed it in thirty years was when I was sick on chemo and twice when I was out of town (and the two years it was cancelled due to Covid). Hasta la próxima… Corpus Christi Sevilla

I think this is as close as I’m going to get to Feria this year. This was the annual carriage parade that takes place on the first day of Feria and, more importantly, takes place five minutes from my house. So I popped over yesterday to takes some pics and an hour later I decided I was NOT going to Feria. It was already 35º and will remain so all week. It’s a minimum 45 minute walk there (and then back again) and, once there, absolutely no shade anywhere. So nah. Anyhow, I don’t even like Feria. But I’m glad I got to see the carriages.

So this is happening… the first Triana Velá (street party) since 2019. But as it’s also going to be 44º over the weekend I think I’ll be giving it a miss. To be honest I’m not really fond of the street party bit, but in the early evenings they hold the “cucaña”, when a boatful of hopefuls try to snatch a flag from the end of a long greased pole sticking out from the bow. Most end up flagless in the water, but it’s fun to watch. Well, maybe next year.

So it’s been a while! The last time Corpus Christi was celebrated here was in 2019, so everyone was pretty excited to have it back again. And even though it was tough getting up so early today I’m glad I did. Walked the rosemary strewn procession route before the procession started, even caught them bringing the La Cena paso to the Cathedral. But by the time I’d walked the route and taken some photos, and generally just enjoyed being out in the fresh morning air, it was time for breakfast. So as usual I didn’t see the actual procession. Maybe next year. Pics below…
