apartment hunting, home, postaday2011

I know at least one person who loves apartment hunting, and I suppose if I could afford to pay more and didn’t have a deadline then I might feel less stressed about this. I think I’ve seen over a dozen places now and not one of them felt like it could be home, and I’m getting worried as time runs out that I’ll end up in somewhere I don’t like at all.

This is also hugely time consuming and entire half-days are lost going off to see places when I should hunting for clients.

I guess if I were just looking for another apartment, and not a home, then it would be easier. But I really don’t want to live just anywhere and I sure don’t want to end up in some place with a red kitchen or purple bathroom… there sure are a lot of ugly places out there, at least in my price range.

I love tapas interview

It’s been quite a week for Sevilla Tapas! First I got a glowing Trip Advisor review from Tara and Christian, who’d been on my Christmas Day tour, and then a new website called Andalucia Direct surprised me by giving me a free listing.

And today the interview I did this past weekend with Rosana Domínguez (aka Holly Cocina) for I Love Tapas went live!

I’ve been given permission to post an English translation here, which you can read below. You can see the original Spanish version here:

Entrevista a Shawn Hennessey y sus tours de tapas Sevilla Tapas

Shawn Hennessey, compulsive blogger, Twitter addict (with 4 accounts) and long-time Foodie, is originally from Canada but never felt she truly belonged there and so moved to Spain (via Bristol England) in 1992, where she finally found her home. After a year in Salamanca she moved south to Sevilla and in April 2007 started the Sevilla Tapas blog. According to Shawn it all happened by accident while she was out for lunch with a friend on a lovely spring afternoon and it occured to her to take some photos not of just the square and the orange trees, but also of the food, which were then posted on her personal blog, casa az. The response was so positive that she started publishing regular “tapas posts”, which eventually led to a separate website for Sevilla Tapas. Aside from running several blogs, Shawn also writes for travel sites such as Slow Europe, Travel Intelligence and National Geographic, and has recently become the Seville Expert for Simonseeks.

Presently Shawn is working on several projects including her very popular tapas tours, working with local restaurants, managing their social media, and organising special Restaurant & Hotel English courses.

Rain, rain, rain…

apartment hunting, seville

Started off the day listening to the RAIN totally peeing down around 5am … then it just kept on raining. I thought after last winter’s non-stop rain it wouldn’t be possible to have two such winters in a row, but it seems to be happening again.

Then after coffee and making a mess of my WordPress.org updates I decided to take a quick trip to the gym before going to see two apartments (I’d set up the appointments yesterday), so after getting home from the gym I got changed and headed out… even though it’s really not a good idea to look at possible new homes on grey rainy days. Anyhow, after getting a bit lost we got to the first place and I really tried to like it. In fact, if it had been on the top floor rather than on the first then it would have stood more of a chance. But I have to remember that I’m not desperate YET and that there are still two months left to find a place.

The second apartment was much nicer, though not without some drawbacks. The main one being that it’s just too expensive. I’ve set a limit of 700 euros as being reasonable (am now paying 650). But this rather lovely place is 760. Another drawback is that it’s a bit small, though it’s on two levels with a terrace (also air-conditioning, also a lift, and even a storage room in the garage where I can keep my bike, and it’s freshly painted and very clean).

Meanwhile, I had stopped by a neighbourhood bar on Tuesday to ask the owners if they knew of any apartments in the barrio. And well! It turned out that the two women who run this bar (Gloria used to be in my yoga class) also know my landlords and don’t think too highly of them. When I told them what was happening they both said to me that I had nothing to worry about and that another better apartment was going to turn up soon. At which point Gloria took my phone number and repeated that I shouldn’t worry. Weird. Like they had something or somewhere in mind? Well, we shall see.

Back to today… four hours after leaving home I got back soaken wet after getting caught in torrential downpours no less than three times – the final one is shown in the photo. Now my one pair of wearable shoes are no longer wearable and I’m a bit worn out myself.  Which reminds me that the main reason I don’t have a second pair of shoes is because I haven’t come across a pair I like and that fit well. Kind of like a new apartment. New shoes have always just happened to me and I suspect new homes – the best ones – are the same.

my new red moleskine

maspapeles, moleskine, seville

I am trying like heckity to remember where I recently read about somebody buying a new red Moleskine agenda to organise her writing stuff, because over the past couple of weeks it’s become apparent that I need a separate – and portable – day book other than my personal one to keep all my social media work organised. And so with this in mind I visited my friend Maria’s shop called Maspapeles this morning and had a look at her extensive collection of Moleskine notebooks. And I finally decided on a small red weekly organiser that opens to show a week’s calendar on the left and a lined page for notes on the right. Perfect. It also fits perfectly into the front pocket of the fab bag I got at Maria’s place for my September trip to London.

But I am still trying to remember where I first read about this other person’s moleskine, also red, and like mine, with cool little pocket on the inside. Anyhow, I know I’m going to love it, as well as loving the reason I now need two daybooks. And it was great that Maria helped me pick out the one that would be best for my needs. So I got the new moleskine and also a 2011 refill for my old leather daybook.

I love feeling organised.

christmas, sevilla, tapas

Just home from a wonderful Christmas tapas lunch with my friend Juan at Albarama. It’s been awhile since we’ve seen each other and so we made sure to get together during the holidays. It was great to catch up and have some great food and nice wine – I bet even ol’ grinchy Sledpress would have had a good time. Which just goes to show that she’s been doing this Christmas stuff all wrong…
