Local artist Alfredo Rodríguez (also my friend and neighbour – he lives just down the street) has put out his second Sevilla almanac and so I picked up one for myself, one for Debs and another for Paul. Last year’s featured one of his famous bar facades per month, this year we get one barrio per month with 4-5 gorgeous images on each page. Mine is already up and so I’m quite looking forward to next year!

Hearing about this made me feel sick and sad and, yes, fucking angry. A week or so ago a 16th century sculpture in a tiny hidden away square next to the Cathedral was brutally vandalised. After existing in this tiny spot for centuries some fucking asshole (or assholes) thought this was the thing to do. Now… not placing blame on the recent influx of less than desirable tourists in our fair city, or the hoards or football fans from abroad who were in town for two big matches that weekend… but it’s also hard not to.
Meanwhile, this was lovely. Someone put up a floral cross as a memorial while the original one is being restored. That’s the real Sevilla.

It’s December and look what I’ve got! Isn’t this FABULOUS? I’ve long been a fan of Alfredo’s “city façades” of various classic bars and other iconic buildings in Sevilla, a collection he began during the Covid lockdown, and now he has created this wonderful 2023 calendar. A perfect Christmas present for Sevilla lovers, don’t you think? Not only do you get a different bar each month, there are dates mentioned for special Sevilla holidays and birthdays of well-known sevillanos (though I noticed mine was missing).

You may recall that I own a couple of prints by local artist Alfredo Rodriguez (lower right), now well-known for his colourful sketches of Sevilla façades. Well this week the boys behind La Casa del Tigre (upper left) opened a new bar called El Pantera (review coming soon!) and – I love this – chose to feature Alfredo’s work as a kind of permanent exhibit. Every wall is covered with his prints and the effect is fabulous. What a wonderful way of supporting local art and also creating a unique décor and focal point for your bar. Well done guys!

I’ve always loved these beautiful plates that La Azotea has been using for years to adorn their walls, in all three of their locations. But I only just found out they are made by an Italian artist Mauro Basile living in Zahara de los Atunes, in Cádiz. Gorgeous stuff.
