It’s hard to believe that it was four years ago when I bought my first BBQ in Sevilla. A cheap no-frills model found in a suburban mall somewhere out there. Which was still in use when I famously hosted a BBQ in the rain with my friends Ang & Ryan @jetsliketaxis in the spring of 2013. But since then I have barely used it and, upon recent inspection, found the poor thing all rusted out and no longer usable. And if Ang & Ryan weren’t back in town, and if I hadn’t promised them a non-rainy BBQ at some point, I may not have felt inclined to look for another BBQ. Not because I don’t like BBQs (I love burnt flesh!) but because any normal-sized BBQ is just way too big for me, or even me and my housemate Peter. It just always seemed like a lot of effort to set the thing up to cook a couple of burgers, or a few bits of meat or fish.
Then I saw this today! A BBQ bucket. Just as no-frills as my previous one, but small and compact, and presumably perfect for a small BBQ meal for two. Which may turn out to be less than efficient for the sunshiny BBQ promised to Ang & Ryan (no worries, we’ll just make a day of it, and keep replenishing the coals) but I think it will be way more use-friendly for smaller rooftop meals. Also it’s cute. And red. Have you ever used one of these?

Yes, it’s those Jets Like Taxis guys again, Ang & Ryan, this time enjoying a rainy day BBQ on my rooftop. This BBQ had been “in the making” for weeks and was originally going to include two other couples, but in the end I had to cancel twice because of The Rain. Then we got to talking about it during our Macarena day trip and, as this was Ang & Ryan’s last weekend in town, decided that we could sort of half-organise a BBQ for just four people (including Peter) so if we had to cancel last minute then no big deal. Basically it would be burgers & dogs, with Ang in charge of making her famous flavour-packed burgers and me getting some nice chorizo criollo to fill in as hotdogs. Of course – you know me – I had to be sure there was “enough food”, so I also made a nice spinach tortilla and some bacon & cheese croquettes as starters. Next to nothing was left over.
Everything was looking great until Peter lit the charcoal. Suddenly large black clouds swooped in and threatened to, well, threaten our BBQ. But we decided WTF and went ahead with it anyway. And it was fabulous! We sat under one of the large awnings in the rain (the BBQ was under the other one) listening to Paco de Lucía, drinking beer and wine, and seriously eating. There was something quite cosy about sitting out in the rain but being all dry and comfy and warm. How was your Sunday?

It wasn’t quite so blazing hot this past weekend so I took the opportunity to break out the BBQ for the first time this summer. Really I should BBQ all year round EXCEPT for summer since usually the only times it’s bearable to do so is either 9 am or midnight… a sunny January afternoon would be much more comfortable. Anyhow, everyone had a great time including little Luna, who took to inspecting all the plants and finding hiding places (as you can see, Loki is content to find a nice shady spot and stay put). I still wouldn’t feel comfortable letting the cats out on the terraza on their own, but they love coming out when I’m hanging up laundry, watering plants, etc.
That old gentleman Azar prefers spending the hot summer days stretched out on the coolish marble floor under my bed. The tumour on his shoulder has almost doubled in size in the past few weeks and I am becoming torn between wanting him to be with me always and not wanting him to suffer. So far I think he is still doing okay, all things considered.
What did you do over the weekend?

Had the first (but definitely not the last) rooftop BBQ at casa az last night. In fact we started a bit too early (8pm) and it was still pretty hot up there so I had to bring out an electric fan to cool off a little. But I’m getting ahead of myself…
