flor friday deluxe

So it used to be Fino Friday and Manzanilla Monday, but now going with Flor Friday (flor refers to the layer of yeast that forms over the biologically aged sherries in the barrel) because it means I have more options. In this case I ended up trying two outstanding sherries – a fino and a manzanilla – on the same day, which doesn’t happen often.

Twelve-year-old Camborio fino en rama by Bodegas Juan Piñero @bjuanpinero was bottled last October, in the style of the old school fino amontillados. Gorgeous colour, with great texture and depth of flavour. The name (and quote on the bottle) comes from a character in the Romancero Gitano by Federico García Lorca.

Cuestecilla manzanilla by Bodegas Delgado Zuleta @delgadozuleta is one of 600 numbered bottles from a barrel that came from the old Cuestecilla bodega (demolished in 2007) in the Barrio Alto of Sanlúcar de Barrameda. You hear a lot of “this is like drinking straight from the barrel” claims with en rama sherries but this one totally took me back to Sanlúcar.

This week (September 24), I was invited to the presentation of the new look La Goya manzanilla by Bodegas Delgado Zuleta, marking the brand’s centenary year. Organized by the boys at Probando Probando, the event was held on the terrace of the Corte Inglés Gourmet Experience in Sevilla, looking out over the city. It was a nicely low key event, with not too many speeches or too much marketing razzle.

A brief introduction of the new label was given by Jorge Pascual (general director of Delgado Zuleta) and José Federico Carvajal (commercial director of Delgado Zuleta) to some 150 people including bodega shareholders, wine distributors, hoteliers and specialised media.

The result was a very pleasant evening meeting up with old friends, enjoying some tasty snacks of jamón, cheese, oysters and mojama (cured tuna) provided by @MANCHENIETO @PanaderiaObando @OstreasurSG @QuesosPajarete @HerpacBarbate. And of course, sampling plenty of perfectly chilled La Goya (which hasn’t changed – still the same excellent sherry it’s always been).

Thanks as always to the organisers and hosts for a great evening.

What a spectacular way to spend a Manzanilla Monday. Yesterday I was invited to the presentation and tasting of the latest bottling of Bodegas Delgado Zuleta’s premium “en rama” manzanilla Goya XL, a rare and special beast that has only occurred four times in the history of the bodega.

The event was held in the elegant central courtyard at Taberna de Alabadero, and we were given a tasting of two criaderas that were on their way to becoming Goya XL, and then the final product. And well, it was wonderful. I sat spellbound as DZ’s newest winemaker José Antonio Sánchez Pazo told us about the evolution of this very special wine, and also gave us a bit of insight and history about the bodega.

Full report coming soon on the Azahar Sevilla blog.

It’s been a crazy week (in mostly a good way) that got off to a great start when I was invited to a cata on Monday for this year’s edition of Bodegas Delgado Zuleta’s D.O Cádiz white wine Viña Galvana. Delgado Zuleta is of course best known for its sherries (it’s said to be the oldest bodega in the marco de Jerez), especially Manzanilla La Goya, but also produces local white wines.

The 2017 Viña Galvana (85% Palomino Fino and 15% Moscatel) is a fresh, light wine with a bright pale gold colour and a touch of fruitiness, and pairs well with fish and seafood. Really a perfect summer wine. The label pays tribute to one of Sanlucar’s most popular events, the annual horse races on the beach which take place every August. The cata was presented by Jorge Pascual, the Director-General of Delgado Zuleta and enologist José Antonio Sánchez Pazo, with promotion by @ProbandoGastro.

The event was hosted by my friend (and colleague!) Cinta Romero at her gorgeous La Cochera del Abuelo, which is fast becoming one of THE places to hold small personal events in Sevilla.
