Koker is a chain of Spanish women’s clothing shops that has recently moved to Sevilla, and specifically into the old Casa Ruiz location in calle Sierpes, a jewellery shop that had been family-run for generations. Once Koker took over the premises they decided to paint over the marble and bronze façade, apparently without permission from the city council, resulting in a public outcry that spread across social media platforms and the press. The result was that the work was halted and the company was ordered to remove the paint. The photo above was taken this week and it’s not sure if this is the best that can be done as you can still see paint embedded in some of the cracks and pores of the marble. Also they have left the wood trim white, which is quite jarring. It’ll be interesting to see if the shop is successful.

Look at this shit. The tacky brass with black marble is bad enough, but they actually had the gall to name this place La Jugetería (after the Juguetería F. Cuevas, which occupied this building for 65 years). They might have considered keeping the wonderful original tile work. Shame.

So sad to see this. J.Cuevas Juguetería Técnica, a family business, has closed after 65 years. Manuel Cuevas Álvarez, grandson of the founder, cites a drop in sales due to the “avalanche” of tourists in the centre and the growth of e-commerce as the main reasons for the closure. I’m told that this landmark building will soon house a cocktail bar…
After the loss of Bazar Victoria (twice!) and Confituría Filella, this is yet another story of how tourism and greed are changing the face of Sevilla. Before long it will stop being the very thing that people are flocking here to see. Heartbreaking. Upon seeing my post of this on Instagram yesterday a friend quoted Wilde – “each man kills the thing he loves”. 😦

It’s out and about! The Seville Gastronomic Heritage guide to tapas.
You can find the app here… Visita Sevilla
Establishments suggested come from a popular survey conducted by Tourism Board of City of Seville website between April 15 and September 15, 2013, as well as from a selection prepared by a technical commission of experts composed of Julio Fernández, Chef of the Michelin Star restaurant Abantal, Fernando Huidobro, president of the Andalusian Academy of Gastronomy and Tourism, Javier Compás, wine tasting technician, journalist and gastronomic writer. Shawn Hennessey, best gastronomy Twitter 2013 and author of Sevilla Tapas gastronomy tours. And Paco Sánchez, historic bar-restaurant owner in town, former owner of Bar Giralda and Bar Estrella. As a rule, these establishments are limited to the traditional and touristic heart of the city, although some other establishments are also included beyond that area because of uniqueness, quality and tradition.
