alfalfa, home, seville

One of the great things about living in my new barrio is that I come across great deals like this at the local supermarket – gambones (giant prawns) for just 11€ a kilo. How could I pass them up? But what to do with them? Well, after a bit of thought about a light low-carb meal I went for the easy option – a killer prawn, chorizo & spinach risotto. Whatever.

What would you have done with them?

I also got a couple of big fat tuna steaks for next to nothing that I’m now off to grill with a bit of lemon and garlic. Totally loving my new neighbourhood…

ikea revisited

home, IKEA

It’s been ages since I’ve had to go to IKEA and it was interesting to note that the old love/hate thing is still alive. I mean, it’s a fun place to spend an hour or so wandering around for this or that, but the problem is that – not having a car – it means taking a long bus ride out to the ‘burbs and so it’s impossible to get there and back again without spending at least half a day, including lots of walking.

I had a list. There were two things I didn’t want to return without – some sort of shelf unit for the bathroom and a bed for the small bedroom. And well, I finally found the shelf unit, but the beds there seemed very expensive, so I dropped that idea knowing that I could find something better and cheaper in the calle Feria.

But, as usual, found some other things that the new casa az needed. Or at least is nicer having. Two bookcases for the very long hallway “cat airlock” that is the entrance, a kitchen step-stool (I can’t reach the top shelves in the cupboards) and the famous IKEA chair that probably everybody has owned at one time or another. I haven’t until now, but this should make Jessica laugh as when she was here for dinner last week she said she was sure I had one of those chairs. Well, I do now and it’ll be perfect for the upstairs room – either for reading or hanging out and watching a dvd. And of course had to get a RED one because everything else here is so white.

Other items bought: a flamenco shower curtain, some kitchen stuff, gauzy cotton curtains for my bedroom, and a couple packets of very crispy sour cream & onion crisps. Nog and I also had a gawd-awful snack while we were there. I could just about manage the prawn croquette so it was up to Nog to eat the rest. And then came the really fun part. Taking the list of stuff down to the warehouse, getting one of those huge trolleys, and trying to find everything. And then waiting in a queue for an eternity or two. I needed to get the big heavy stuff delivered and once again wondered about their curious pricing policy, based on how much you spend. It turned out that if the chair cushion was included in the delivery it would cost 28 euros instead of 13 euros (!!) so while Nog lugged home the sundry kitchen & bathroom stuff  in a massive paper bag I carried the big red cushion for the chair, all the while thinking “I’m saving 15 euros!” and feeling a bit sad that 15 euros made such a difference in my life.

Meanwhile, it got up to 31º in the centre of town this afternoon so after getting off the bus we stopped for a nice cold beer – first time sitting outside on a sunny terrace this year! And finally got home with my ankle aching and my feet throbbing… and now awaiting the delivery. I think they’re lost.

it really tied the room together…

cats, home, moroccan rugs

I mean, doesn’t it??

Some of you may remember my wonderful trip to Tangier & Asilah with Susan (aka Pipocas) and this pretty berber rug that I’d bartered for at the medina in Asilah, which ended up hanging on my wall at the old place.

You may also recall that I’ve always said I prefer marble floors over wood parquet – because I do – but as I’d been living with wood floors for so long my minimalist style of furnishing became very simple and, well, mostly white, which worked quite well against vanilla & ochre walls and wood floors. But white furniture with grey-white marble and pale stone-coloured walls seems to be calling out for a bit of colour. And so I tried the rug on the floor yesterday and you can see for yourself! It looked fab and, to quote the Big Lebowski, really tied the room together. I use the past tense because as soon as Loki woke up from his siesta he made a beeline for the rug and proceeded to shred it to shreds. I rescued it before too much damage was done and guess it’ll be going up on a wall soon. Think it’s time for a more colourful sofa cover…

cancer, home, life, work

A curious day yesterday as things got fixed, some loose ends were tied up, and other projects continued to grow. I realised when I got up and sat down at my desk in the living room just how perfect that set-up is as a work space, especially this time of year. In summer I’m sure I’ll often be bringing my laptop up to the terrace to enjoy working out in the sun and fresh air, at least in the mornings.

Things started well when the Movistar technician came back to fix the stuff he’d installed on Saturday, thus ending the awful saga of trying to get my service reconnected. He’s the same guy who put in my internet connection a couple of weeks ago and remembered me (and my cats) from the old place. Anyhow, at one point I mentioned complaining about Movistar on Twitter and he said – “Oh yes, they know about you!” – and explained how he was told to be careful with me and be extra nice. Ha. And later I got a private twitter message from Movistar asking if everything was okay and saying “if there’s anything else, you know where to find us”. So of course I told them about the iPhone 4 fiasco… still waiting to hear about that one.

Later in the afternoon I had to go and see my oncologist. At first I thought I’d have to go alone, but Nog had some time before his evening class and came with me. And when we were called into her office just 15 minutes after arriving it seemed like there’d be plenty of time to get through the appointment before Nog had to leave, but no…

bb king, blues, home, lucille

… the traditional blues song opening, made famous by BB King (that’s his Gibson guitar called Lucille on the left). But there was nothing about having the blues this morning. Quite the opposite as it was the first morning waking up in the new casa az that things felt normal and that there was some sort of natural routine going on. Not just that awful “camping out” feeling, not being able to find your socks or the cat meds and stuff like that. Plus, because I’d repaired the broken shower, dealing with the way-too-small bathroom became that little bit less annoying. Also, most of the tiresome paperwork involving the switching over of utilities is almost over, and although there are still a few “handyman” jobs for the landlords to take care of, at least I know they’ll get done.

And so I woke up this morning and, after coffee in bed while writing a blog post for a client, I got up and showered, went out to the supermarket, came home to a relatively organised kitchen and did some prep work for tonight’s dinner with soon-to-be flatmate Jessica. Before that I have a class with Agustín – I usually go to his place but he’s coming here because he’s dying to see my new home. Meanwhile, I’m here at my desk working on some stuff for other clients. And well … it’s great. I love it. Living and working in my fab new light-filled space.

I’m home! 🙂
